Forgive me if I’m wrong, but am I the only person who doesn’t remember Andy Warhol as being a designer of understated hoodies? Well, I have no idea if he’d be turning in his grave at the thought of his name being used on a clothing line like this, but I personally think that this hoodie is pretty cool, even if it is a lot simpler and quieter than most of the stuff that I put on here Monday through Friday. The placement is a little off-centre, and the print goes right up to the armpit, which just makes the design feel more complete somehow, not taking the half-assed method and only printing the part that is usually visible from the front. And the buttons on the kangaroo pockets are a pretty cool idea too, since it has happened to me in the past that I’ve things from a split kangaroo pocket, so I’m all for anything to stop those kinds of unfortunate instances, although I can’t help but feel that the hoodie would look a bit neater if the buttons weren’t there…

I totally forgot to mention that I saw the worlds most hyped hoodie when I was in Tokyo. Yep, I saw 2 of the LRG full skeleton hoodies that people were going crazy for and buying on eBay for hundreds a few months ago. I didn’t actually go into “Larry’s Sports & Outdoorwear” when I took these shots because we were in the middle of a hardcore day of sightseeing, but when I went back a few days later they were both sold out, I tried on another hoodie by LRG, but since I didn’t know if Kanye West owned it, and it didn’t glow in the dark, I didn’t really see any point buying one.

This shirt is pretty dark, not in a gothy kind of way, it’s just that when you put animals heads and blood on a tee you’re pretty much slotting yourself into a niche, aren’t you?

I must admit it took me quite a long time to realise that ‘alaska’ was actually skillfully written into the body of the design. I was resizing the photos for this post when I had one of those “oooooooh” moments of realisation, and then I felt a bit stupid, because now that I know its there its pretty obvious. I think its that kind of attention to detail and complexity of design that shows what kind of direction that alaska! (a freelance designer in Los Angeles) will be heading in when they release more designs in the future.

The print feels pretty good, and my experience tells me that within a couple of washes it will have softened down a bit, as with most tees with this much ink on them it does take a little time before they reach their peak. It’s printed on a Gildan tee, which is funny because I always associate Gildan (and FotL) with tees that I used to get at rock gigs, and this tee kinda has a rock aesthetic and attitude to it, especially the typeface for ‘alaska’, so I guess that’s kind of fitting. The tee feels soft, quite a bit thicker than your standard American Apparel tee, but not really all that heavy. I don’t really know how much stock Gildan tees are, but alaska! have really managed to keep the price down on this and you can pick it up for just $12!

I was pretty tempted to recommend this weeks Select Tee, ‘Electro Love Boat‘, despite all the hate it is currently getting on their forums/blogs, because it’s a bit messier and different from the usual Threadless offerings. Maybe the chattering Threadless faithful need to expand their horizons past clean vectored images?

Yeah, I was just telling them to expand their horizons, but perhaps that can happen next week, because ‘Usual Day at Work‘ is just so cute (as long as it isn’t racist). I really like how the chain around the bad tooth (they are teeth, right?) goes all the way up the t-shirt to the top of the neck, instead of cutting off halfway and ruining the effect. The colorway is also pretty cool too, the blue on blue seems to work pretty well.

And whaddya think of the product shot? I think that this is the first time we’ve been taken inside their new store, even if we can only see the window.

What am I meant to do when I have the unfortunate combination of a painful migraine making me not want to look at a bright LCD screen, and the guilt from not posting a hoodie on Friday, and the guilt from not reviewing a t-shirt that I received at the weekend. Simple, give you a link to a cool hoodie, take some pills and float off to sleep. There’s an eagle on it, and it looks kinda vintage.

Since I liked donating through Kiva.org so much last month, I did it again!

This month I/we gave $25 (plus $2.50 to Kiva to help them with admin) to a Honduran woman called Dunia Guadalupe Herrera who owns a clothes shop and needs money to purchase some inventory. She only needs $75 more to reach her target loan amount (a pretty modest $225), so if you want to help her out then please click on information at the top of the post.
