Review: ‘Addition’ by Design By Humans

Design By Humans sent over a well-stuffed package earlier this week, with tees showing off their various types of printing that they offer, which really let me get a good feel for what they’re all about. From their launch I could tell that DBH really mean business, you don’t just offer $5000 as a kickoff prize on a whim, and then I read Adam’s interview with them on Wednesday, and I’ve just got this feeling that I really, really want them to do well. I know there are a few people that have concerns about the terms and conditions attached to uploading, but I still feel that designers are getting a good deal if their designs are picked as winners, especially with the ‘Rockstar Awards‘ scheme of paying more depending on how many tees you sell, on top of the original prize money.

This particular design is by Human #15 (although it says #18 inside the tee), better known as ‘wemakesomething‘, is pretty cool. Its got quite a lot of edge to it, I’d half expect to find it in a rock club if those damned British emo kids would wear something interesting for a change. I guess you could say that there’s quite a lot of cliched elements to it, but I think that they work really well together, and the color palette is simply superb. I was considering that maybe it should be printed bigger, but then I figured that with all the different elements that it might just look a little off if they were blown up so that they weren’t squashed together, which is the opposite of what I would usually say.

Quality: I’m impressed, the printing is pretty soft, not the softest I’ve ever felt, but it seems like it will last. The unusual aspect to this tee can be seen on the right of the picture above, which is the “whip-stitch embroidery”, it is a pretty interesting addition that you don’t see very often, I don’t know if it is something that will be available to all designers or maybe just these initial releases, but its pretty cool. They also have a little tag on the bottom hem of the tee, but its pretty unobtrusive for all you label haters, and it would probably be easy to unpick if you were all that bothered. On the tee’s printed tag it says that they use some of the finest cotton known to mankind, and I don’t know if this softness is perfection, it is pretty damned soft. In terms of cut (and thickness) I would say that it is between an American Apparel and Gildan, slightly fitted, and not heavy but definitely not light either.
