A blog about hoodies & t-shirts

110 Review: Kapoow by Yes No Maybe

I always thought that in the old Batman TV show when they did that whole “Biff, sock, pow!” thing that they were really copping out showing on the action. Sure, it was a reference to the comic (comics can do it, I have no beef with that), but I would have thought that when fans were watching a TV show that they’d want to see something that was a bit more akin to reality. When it comes to tees though, I think that comic book styling can work really well.

‘Kapoow’ is a really solid design, I think that keeping it to a single colour actually adds to the design, if it had a bright, contrasting colours then I think it would lean a bit too much on the streetwear side of things. Also, this is another example of a brand making a tee that does mention their brand name, but it isn’t too invasive, and doesn’t really ruin the feeling and flow of the design.

The quality is impressive, very impressive, the tee is soft (by Continental Clothing apparently, thanks Tom the helpful commenter!) and I would say that the fit is somewhere between a fitted tee and a regular shape, so my advice would be to buy your usual size. The print itself.feels good as well, and my sixth sense of print quality tells me that it will last pretty well. One thing I would warn you of though, the washing and care instructions (pictured in the thumbnails at the bottom of this post) are printed on the back of the tee, rather than on the inside like on a normal tee.

Creature Hoodie @ Rocket World

babsi_ch2_600 Creature Hoodie @ Rocket World

Every so often, I see babies wearing onesies that have ears to make them look like a bear or another animal, and that’s cute, I do think there’s a hint of over-egging the pudding regarding the cuteness level, but hey, I’m cool with it. A couple of weeks ago I saw a person (as in, a fully grown woman) wearing a hoodie similar to the one pictured above, it had a brown velour look to it, a bit like fur, and was topped off by a small pair of cat-like ears. That’s a little weird. But I actually kind of admire this attempt at melding the human and animal worlds by Rocket World. They seem to have put in a lot more effort in with the details (such as the headphone wire loop, iPod pocket, and the animal paws sewn onto the end of the sleeves) than most companies that bring out novelty products like this. As an added bonus, by making yourself look like an animal you’ll be helping animals since a portion of your sale goes to selected Wildlife groups.

The hoodies are unisex, but I’m not so sure whether you guys would be all that into these.

iseedumbpeoplecap Roys tees from The IT Crowd S2E2

(sorry about the quality of the screengrab, I had to take it from YouTube)

I know that traditionally people move forward when it comes to t-shirts, but since I’d already found the tee from episode 3 of the second series I thought I might try my luck at finding some others from the increasingly popular sitcom. Roy spent quite a lot of his time in this episode (titled “Return of The Golden Child”) wearing a suit, but he also found time to wear a couple of tees.

This was the first t-shirt he wore, it’s not exactly a great tee, and the reference is far too old for my liking, but hey, each to their own. As you can imagine, it’s called “I see dumb people” and is available from ThinkGeek for $14.99 but if you search for the name then you’ll find many other versions of it.

futurism Roys tees from The IT Crowd S2E2

I recognised the Futurism tee by Insanely Great Tees as soon as it popped on screen, although the print does look disappointingly small compared to how it looks in the product photos. The tee costs $17

Just in case anyone fancies watching the episode, I’ve embedded it after the break, although it is on YouTube, so expect it to disappear pretty rapidly.

A list of 30 tee blogs

thirtsblog A list of 30 tee blogs

I don’t strictly think of HYA* as a tee blog, but if there was just a category for hoodie blogs things would be pretty lonely for me, so I don’t mind being included on this list by an Italian design site called FrizziFrizzi. There’s a few in there that I’d never seen before so its probably checking out for those of you that want to broaden your tee reading horizons. If you would like to read a Google translated version you can find that here.

Considering that this isn’t an exhaustive list, it does make me wonder though, do we really need all of these tee blogs?

‘Face’ by We Kill You

wekillyou Face by We Kill You

There’s a touch of the Domo Kun’s going on with this tee, something which is probably exaggerated by the choice of a brown shirt colour, but that doesn’t stop it from being a cool tee. I guess this design is also a testament to how easy it is for simple shapes to look like a face, although I think that might be something about humans always trying to find faces where there aren’t any.
