marginlogo Margin: Prepare for the British Invasion

Well, that was fun!

Over the weekend I managed to hit up not just Margin, but also To Be Confirmed and The Park yesterday. I met a lot of new brands, a lot of nice people, and collect enough press info that I need to buy a few acres of rainforest to ease my conscience over the amount of paper I gathered.

Taking your own photos is generally frowned upon at these kind of places (presumably due to designers fearing rip-offs of their unreleased work), most of the Margin-based posts aren’t going to look all that different, but hopefully they’ll have a different feel, since for a change I’ve actually had a chance to feel the clothes and chat with the designers.

annamaywongtem 38047 474c85a7b205e m Anna May Wong Hoodie by Fifty Seven Thirty Three

According to the blurb, Anna May Wong was the first Chinese actress to achieve mainstream success in Hollywood, presumably paving the way for more asians to make their way in the biz that they call show. I guess that the images on the left of the hoodie are of Anna May in her various film roles, and there appears to be something written in Chinese on the right, which probably doesn’t say “I have no idea what this means in Chinese.”

Powered by Tofu from Peta

I noticed Turk (actor Donald Faison) wearing this tee on an old episode of Scrubs a couple of days ago and found it pretty easy to track down. I think this is yet another case of product pictures not doing the design justice. Admittedly, this isn’t exactly a stunner, but surely once you’ve received your tees from the printers it makes a lot more sense to show the customer the real thing rather than a computer-generated mock-up?I got a box of tofu for Christmas (strange family, I know) and I was amazed to find that the box is a tofu ‘factory’, when it goes into the carton it is a liquid, and starts to turn solid in the carton. Something about that process says to me, ‘this should not be eaten by people.’

Is there meant to be a certain amount of irony in this design? That there aren’t really any graphics on it except for the paint splatters and claw marks? That instead of something illustrative they went with the ‘go to’ font of Helvetica?

Still pretty cool hoodie.
