Avril Lavigne

That yay in the title may or may not be sarcastic, I haven’t decided yet. A surprisingly large amount of people seem to find HYA by searching for what she wears so clearly some people like her style, and I love that ‘Girlfriend’ song she did, but there’s just something about celebrities releasing clothing lines that seems doomed to mediocrity, so who knows how it’ll turn out. From the AP:

The edgy, pop-rock star’s clothing line “Abbey Dawn” was named after her childhood nickname.

“I actually am the designer,” she told Newsweek for editions on newsstands Monday. “I try everything on and approve it all.”

Hmmmm, I don’t know about you, but I was under the impression that designing clothes meant actually designing them, rather than trying them on and saying “yep, that’ll do, cha-ching!”

I got an extremely enthusiastic e-mail from Mare Rosemayer, one half of the duo behind Effin Effigy, and her energy was enough to refocus my attention on blogging, just as I was tempted to leave the desk and go get some shortbread. Offtopic, but if shortbread is, well, short bread, is there such a thing as ‘longbread’, and is ‘mediumbread’ just regular bread? Google offers nothing but terrible jokes on the subject.

I’m not even going to spend time trying to segue from shortbread to Polynesia (the inspiration for the design)… this track jacket looks cool, there seems to be a lot of detail in the design, although the pics are a bit small (one of the few problems I have with the Big Cartel powered stores), the colourway works well, and there’s a bit of print on the collar too which is pretty unusual.

Here’s their blurb:

A superb collab between the infamous Z-Spot (of Strange Famous Records forum fame) and Zagadka- two Z’s in full effect.

Z-Spot has hand illustrated a Polynesian inspired design which is printed atop a cloud of lime and cream. A removable green fabric covered button is yours to place wherever you’d like!

Jacket is 100% cotton in a light weight french terry full zip up with cadet collar.

Logo Amnesty by Bland Wear

Logo Amnesty by Bland Wear

Hmmm, seems pretty foolhardy to me for a brand to call themselves ‘Bland’, its almost as if they’re asking for trouble from meaner bloggers than me, but this is a pretty cool idea for a tee so I’ll let it slide.

Having a logo on a piece of clothing is increasingly something that people are turning away from, as long that the use of a logo is done in a way that makes it obvious that the producers aren’t just trying to use the buyer for advertising I don’t mind it, but I can understand why there are a lot of people that refuse to wear any tees with even the name of the brand on it. This tee is a great way of poking fun at brand culture, and I bet that Naomi Klein would love it.

This is another of those hoodies that I actually wouldn’t buy and wear, but feel like I should mention it to you just because its interesting. I really like the hood, the way that its slightly funneled, and also because it wraps around itself.slightly at the front. Its not every day that you see pockets with the seams on the outside either, and whilst I actually quite like the colourway, there’s a certain je ne sais quoi that means I’m just not that enthusiastic about this hoodie.

Mauve Moves to a New Store!

new-mauve-main Mauve Moves to a New Store!
Anyone remember the lovely people that generously sponsored the Christmas giveaway which had more than $200 worth od prizes up for grabs? No prizes this time for remembering that it was Mauve. They’ve moved their retail store to a new location at 507 East Balboa, Newport Beach, so if you’re in the area (possibly on a fan tour recreating scenes from The O.C.) pop by and check it out. Tell them Andy from HYA sent you, you won’t get any discount, but it will make me feel important.

The best thing to come out of Philadelphia since cheesesteak sandwiches (I’ve never had a real one but am still amazed by poor imitations), 2one5, have placed some items from their latest range onto the virtual shelves of their store that definitely deserve a slice of your time. They’ve shown me some images from the lookbook and the new hoodies look really, really nice, a slight departure from where they were last season, but also an evolution towards better things in my eyes.2one5
