A blog about hoodies & t-shirts

Mike Norman thinks that Barack Obama looks like a monkey…

I’ve just realised that none of my tee blogging brethren have gone near this story, which probably means I should steer clear too, but if its on a t-shirt and its news then I think I should at the very least alert you to its presence. Basically, a tavern owner in Georgia thought it was a good idea to produce a t-shirt which had Curious George, a cartoon chimp for those of you that are unaware, on it with the slogan “Obama in ‘08″ written underneath. The Bar owner, Mike Norman, claims that he doesn’t mean any offence with the t-shirts, and that he just thought that the monkey and Senator Obama looked alike. He’s still selling the t-shirts (who on Earth would buy one?), but the owners of Curious George (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) aren’t particularly happy about their image being used in such a way, so whilst free speech ensures this guy can create such a t-shirt, copyright law will probably mean that he can’t do so for very long.

Brooklyn Industries flag by forklift

Oh damn, I totally forgot to post this, which is a bit silly since it is a code that’s totally exclusive to us HYA folk (unless someone republishes it…), although it does have an open ended expiration date so hopefully its still working. If you spend $50 or more in the Brooklyn Industries online store you can get $5 off by using the coupon code BKIHYA. I think they dropped a new line of graphic tees last week, so there should be plenty for you to pick from.

Pirate Jenny by a.mar.illo for A Better Tomorrow

Jenny doesn’t look particularly pirate-y to me, but that doesn’t stop me from liking this design by Sven Palmovski (aka a.mar.illo), if you don’t recognise the name, then you’ll probably recognise some of his designs from the myriad of t-shirt design competitions, keep an eye out and you’ll see him popping up rather often. Oh, and is it just me, or would this look really cool as a print?Costiness=€16 Link

Ucon are hungry for new tees

Ucon, who came to our attention a few weeks back and I’m happy to be featuring them again with a new line of food-themed tees and a great photoshoot to go with them (which explains why I put so many pics at the top of this post).

There’s three colourful designs in the mini-collection, involving donuts, ice lollies and watermelon, or as I like to call them, two things I feel guilty about eating and one that I don’t.

They’re all €29.95 and all in stock at the Ucon shop at the moment.

I’m starting to get into text shirts at the moment, and this one speaks to me for some reason. To me, this tee kind is poking fun at message tees that are supposed to be poignant and thought-provoking, by having a poignant and thought-provoking message. Genius!

XLarge DIY Contest

Press release first, my thoughts second:

It’s back - the XLarge Design Contest - your chance to gain immortality within the echelons of designers like Angela Johnson, G. Dan Covert, Billy Valdez, Rory Wilson and the winner last time, Winston Acosta.

GET STARTED! Check out the contest entry page and use the design templates to create your own original design. Post them up using the form. On June 30th, 2008 we’ll review the submissions and announce a winner. Entries will be judged on originality and sauce.

The grand prize winner will see his or her print make it into production for our Spring 09 season. They will receive a bunch of shirts and a $100 Gift Cerfiticate to the XLarge.com website. Three runners up will receive $25 Gift Certificates to the website and due props for nearly making it.

You can enter as often as you like. Don’t forget to read the rules before you enter.

Good luck!

Is it just me, or does that prize seem more than a little stingy to you? Considering that XLarge aren’t exactly a small operation, just look at the amount of stores they have, and that list doesn’t include other retails locations they’re stocked in. I guess that being able to say that you’ve designed a tee for XLarge would look good in a portfolio simply because they’re a respected name, but considering this tee is going to be in their Spring 09 collection I’d expect the prize to include something you could pay the bills with too.
