We all know the back story behind American Apparel, how the tees are made in sweatshop free conditions by people being paid a fair wage, even getting massages every so often. And that’s great, hurrah for non-sweatshop labour! But the CEO of American Apparel, Dov Charney, is a rather more controversial character, having been the subject of four sexual harassment lawsuits (all dismissed out of court) and numerous other allegations of being a kinda weird guy that spends a lot of his time not wearing trousers. Anyway, just google his name for more salacious stuff that I’m afraid to write here (the opening couples of paragraphs from this Radar article should get you in the right frame of mind, even if it is meant to be a defence of Dov). The video embedded above is a cartoon from Current TV’s Super News, which is all about Dov explaining the world of American Apparel to a t-shirt called Shirty, surely the worst character since Towelie, the talking towel from South Park. Its a pretty funny video, so give it a watch.

One x Fifty Thousand Charity T-shirt

I’m sure that you’ve all heard about the earthquake (and following aftershocks) that have devastated large areas in China, leaving around 34,000 dead, 29,000 missing, and almost 5 million left homeless. At times like this the design community often attempts to finds ways to help that go beyond just giving money, and the above tee is trying to do just that.It isn’t actually on sale yet, but things seem to be fairly far along so it shouldn’t be too long now. I’ll let the designer explain the design and what they’re trying to do with it:

I thought it would be cool to do something to show the true magnitude of the number of lives that have been lost, while still celebrating the uniqueness of each individual. I decided I would make a single tally mark for each of the estimated 50,000 casualties (I actually decided to do it when I still thought the number was around 12-13k, and while my investment of time is now greater - I think the significance of the project has increased as well). So the final design will feature 50,000 unique, individual marks.

50,000 lives lost
50,000 individual marks
50,000 shirts
50,000 people supporting the cause

My goal would be to sell each of the 50,000 shirts for $20 over-cost in order to raise a minimum of $1,000,000.00. Our target price is currently $24/shirt

Each shirt will be individually numbered (1 of 50,000 and so on) on the back shoulder. Shirt numbers 1 and 50,000 will be reserved for an auction to help raise even more support.

I was also thinking that we could allow for donations above and beyond the final price tag - so if I wanted to buy the shirt for $50.00, I could do so.

The final donation would be given to either the Red Cross or World Vision, or some other relief organization currently working in China.

It would be brilliant if they could reach their goal of $1 million dollars for charity, getting everything set up quickly is clearly very important, so that the events are still fresh in people’s minds.

Endangered Species by Glennz

Ever since it’s discovery in the waters of Japan the sushi fish has become a worldwide delicacy, one of the species is even reffered to as ‘the teriyaki chicken of the sea’. Over consumption has now seen their numbers dwindle, so lets celebrate its delicious existence before it disappears forever!

I really wish that someone would open a sushi restaurant near where I live (we get thousands and thousands of Japanese tourists a year, and yet no one has spotted the niche), then I wouldn’t have to spend whole afternoons preparing fish and rice just so that I could enjoy a few rolls. I wonder if Glennz is ever going to put out a tee that is lame, because this great streak can’t go on forever.

A Bathing Abe by I Came From Nothing

I don’t own much Bape (okay, just a mook and a small fleece blanket), but I still like to keep my eye on A Bathing Ape since they do help change the direction that streetwear heads. Being parodied is par for the course when you in the top of your field like A Bathing Ape are, and this ‘A Bathing Abe’ tee is a really great example of it. I guess that if you wanted to go with a ‘funny’ angle then the designer could have put a towel on honest Abe’s head (in that almost magical way that only women can achieve for some reason), but I guess that would have taken away from the purity of the parody, and probably worsened the tee overall, which I guess is why I write about tees and don’t design them!Costiness=£10 Link (also available in a badass gold foil on black colourway)

Threadless x Timbuk2 pop up shop

Okay, so yesterday’s Threadless news about the prints was truly ‘threadless’ since it was paper-based, but today’s update is a least a little bit more closely related to our regular subject matter since I would presume that the limited edition Treadless Select bags by Timbuk2 are made using threads of… something (what are bags made out of?).I think that claiming to have a pop up shop within your own shop is a bit odd, but whatever, cool bags with (presumably) cool designs on them. You can look/purchase at the Threadless Chicago store from May 23rd until June 1st, and you should also be able to buy them at timbuk2.com.
