A blog about hoodies & t-shirts

RikkiB has hit another out of the park with this design. I really like the way that the dot matrix halftones (my bad!) of Marilyn is contrasted with the solid colours of the Ziggy Stardust lightning bolt. Oh, and as if my recommendation wasn’t enough, this design was tee of the day over at Emptees a few months ago.

It’s not that often that I see a t-shirt and actually stop and think “wow,” but this did managed to achieve that. The style feels reminiscent of Kozyndan to me, and that is almost always a good thing.

I’m afraid its only available in sizes S and XXL at the moment, hopefully it will get reprinted at some point, because I’m almost regretting losing all that weight that means I can’t wear this tee (or, conversely, not losing enough that I could fit into a small).

I don’t really know anything about the world of hats, I didn’t even know that they could also be called ‘lids’. I like them and have a small collection for when I just can’t be bothered to sculpt my hair (and it is sculpting sometimes), but my knowledge of who’s hot and who is not is very, very limited. So with that in mind, here’s Hat Hype, a blog all about New Era hats, fitted caps, and lid related news. Anyone know of any other cool hat blogs? I can see myself turning from “Andy the t-shirt guy” into “Andy the t-shirt guy that also wears hats.”

So, what do we have here? It’s a new t-shirt design competition… again, who is the designer of this t-shirt? Wotto… again. It almost feels as if this blog is turning into the wotto appreciation society, which wouldn’t exactly the worst thing in the world since he clearly knows his way around Illustrator, but how about giving some other designers a chance, eh wotto?

Fair and Bare are a new-ish design competition based in Wales who use Fairtrade certified cotton t-shirts (from Epona Clothing. Apparently the shirts are made in an organic way, but they don’t have organic certification yet because that is a two-year process. Basically, you can be assured that kids in sweatshops didn’t make your t-shirts, unless the screen printer at Fair and Bare HQ in Cardiff is a small boy… which I doubt. The first design they’ve released, is of someone hugging a tree, but I’ve been told that they don’t actually want to be known as a tree hugger kind of company, just a t-shirt company that happens to use fair trade tees. In terms of money the winners prize is £200 ($375 according to xe.com), not as much as some of the bigger players, but hopefully the prize package will grow as the company does.

I’ve looked through Frustone’s website a few times, I’ve looked at the definition tee, and I’ve read their e-mail to me. Even after all that I still can’t quite work out what exactly being Frustone (pronounced froo-ston-eh) is, I think the definition changes depending upon context. But let’s be honest, this is HYA, all we’re interested in is the tees, right?

First off they’re made of bamboo (mostly). I’ve never been the recipient of a bamboo tee, but I only ever hear good things about them, and I think they might be quite environmentally friendly too, so that’s a plus. The designs are pretty cool too, the prints are black, nothing too extravagant, but all the designs are well put together, and I’d bet go with a lot of outfits. They also sell tote bags that have the designs on.

rsz-it-1 Send your tees to some TV guy, become famous!

Remember how I became mildly obsessed with writing about and hunting down the t-shirts that were featured in the Channel 4 comedy show The IT Crowd? Well, series three has been written, and now the producers want public help in dressing the set with large amounts of geeky goodness.

How would you like to help in designing the look of series 3? Specifically, you’d be helping us choose the stuff that litters the main set. I’m talking about posters, comics, fanzines, T-shirts… anything you’ve seen in the last few months that you think is pretty cool or captures the spirit of the show or a particular character. By now, most of you know the kind of things I like…weird toys, indie comics, sci-fi, geek references, internet memes, boardgames…normally I’d delight in tracking down the stuff myself, but as I say, it’s just not going to happen this time round.

In the very first draft of the show I described the set as looking like “a cross between a comics shop and the batcave”. I wanted it to feel like a geek Shangri-La, and in each series I’ve felt we nearly got there. Maybe this time, with you guys involved, we’ll finally nail it.

Please send your suggestions to ben.capel@talkbackthames.tv

There are loads of suggestions for what should be in the office on the BoingBoing post where this whole thing originated at (BB Cory is a consultant on the show, I think), but I’m sure a few of you tee designers/sellers might fancy seeing your tees up on screen. The show is pretty popular in the UK, and I get a surprisingly large amount of traffic from people searching for IT crowd shirts, so it could actually end up being fairly profitable for you if you were to end up on the show.
