I like to think that Hide Your Arms has exposed me to a whole new world in which t-shirts are just something that you wear, they can often be wearable art. I love wearing tees by my favourite artists, and my friends usually take a look and give an approving nod but aren’t too interested, however, when I’m wearing a t-shirt with some kind of pop culture reference on it they all go crazy, I think that there must be a part of the brain in people born during the early 80s that wakes up when they see anything that reminds them of the decade that fashion forgot. I didn’t think that
Voltron was all that popular here in the UK, but pretty much everyone I met recognised it, one person hummed the theme tune, and whenever someone said “hey, is that Transformers?” they were scolded by all around them. In short, Voltron is more popular than you’d think, and people still love pop culture related tees.

It’s fairly hard for me to comment on the actual design of this tee, because it isn’t original art, its a direct lift of a promotional image for the
GoLion version of Voltron (when you get sent so many Voltron tees its fairly hard to not get into the mythology of the show). I guess its a pretty cool image, but I can’t really say much more about it than that, because you have to remember that when this show did its original run I couldn’t speak and the height of fashion for me was a onesie.

You may well have noticed from the pictures that the print isn’t completely as you’d expect it to be. Instead of it being the regular print, there are starburst style dots all over it. On the text the starburst is printed in colour, but on Lion Voltron the starburst just shows through to the green of the t-shirt. I can’t quite work out why they’d do this, maybe it helps with the overall vintage look. I haven’t got any problem with it, but its probably something that Voltron obsessed tee fans would want to be aware of. The quality of the tee is fantastic as it always is with
Local Celebrity, you know how something that’s good is described as being ‘top notch’? Well, LC are sat on top of the top notch.

I don’t know why I cover
laFraise‘s weekly releases when I don’t do the same for
Threadless or Design By Humans, or the rest of the myriad of design competitions out there, I guess its because no one else really touches laFraise, probably because they’re still stubbornly ignoring American shoppers (the
laFraise US store isn’t current enough to carry anything from the past few months of releases). I don’t know why they’re not given the praise that they so clearly deserve by the tee world, they consistently print some fantastic designs (Black Colors, one of this weeks designs, is particularly beautiful), get lots of great, well-known artists designing for them, and their prize package certainly isn’t to be sniffed at either.

*Whilst we’re talking about competitions, here’s a reminder that you’ve less than a week to enter the Philadelphia contest to win a Threadless t-shirt and $50 gift certificate.

It’s been a while since I heard anything from the
Tasty Tees crew, so its quite a coincidence that their latest tee has been designed by someone called dreXel, and apparently there is a university in my soon-ish to be adopted hometown of Philadelphia called Drexel. What are the chances!
This design is going to be a limited edition affair, with pre-orders lasting until the end of the month, after which point you won’t be able to make an order for this tee as it is going to be pre-order only. The tees will all be printed up at the end of September/start of October and then hopefully will be shipped in the first week of October.
It’s available in a men’s crew tee, women’s crew tee, and a women’s scoop tee, all printed onto Alternative apparel blanks, and all $30 a pop.

Shirtcity have teamed up with Dailymotion to run a contest all about t-shirt videos. They’re offering up a grand prize of €1000 cash to the person that can produce the best video that has the humble t-shirt as its main subject matter, and Shirtcity/Scribtee gift certificates to the 2nd and 3rd place winners. Also, you you make a video that is deemed to be ‘pretty good’ then you’ll get a free t-shirt whether you’re judged to be a winner by the voting public or not.
Here’s the contest, here’s some more info about the contest, and if you’re after some inspiration, here’s a list of tee related videos that I found a few months back.

It always nice to get an e-mail from
Concrete Hermit because it reminds me that no matter how many American companies I cover, we do have some great brands here in the UK that are doing us proud.
Their latest designs are from Jon Burgerman, Jody Barton, Supermundane, Mark Taplin, Phil Ashcroft, PYKY Studio, Ian Stevenson & Andrew Rae. I also put their eBoy design into the gallery because I just really like eBoy.
