Too Weird to Live Too Rare to Die by Vig Tees

I could be way off the mark, and possibly expecting too much of you guys to know, but is the type treatment on this tee meant to be referencing a movie, I can’t help but feel that I’ve seen it before somewhere, but how would you even go about googling this kind of thing?

It’s a line from Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas. The bats are also a reference.

The quote is, indeed from Fear and Loathing (the first chapter in fact). The actual design for this shirt, and the incorporation of the bat reference into it, was drawn by Ralph Steadman, a British journalist/illustrator, who was a good friend of HST’s and his illustrator on a number of works. Many people have misunderstood this quote to be an excuse or even an encouragement of suicide for those who feel they are an outcast from society. To the proponents of this argument, I’d simply point out that a cursory examination of HST’s work and life, confirms that his message was just the opposite, that it was actually acceptable, and maybe even preferable, to be a societal outcast. He believed he owed the world his weirdness, and that some of you do too.

Well that was much more of an exhaustive explanation than I was expecting on a three and a half year old blog post.
