As a 27 year old guy I’m sure it won’t surprise you to know that I’m not really up on my “80s cartoons aimed at girls that only lasted for 3 seasons” but apparently I am on the wrong side of pop culture in this case, because Mighty Fine/welovefine.com (I don’t really know what I’m meant to call them) are running a JEM t-shirt design competition with a prize of up to $2500 and that suggests to me that quite a lot of people are/were quite excited about the show. One cool aspect of this competition is that they have brought in the original voice of Jem to be a judge. You’ve got until March 23rd to get your entries in and I’ve included all the details after the break.

It’s time, fans of all things truly outrageous: We’re celebrating the day-glo glam fabulousness of JEM and the Holograms, and all their friends (and a few of their enemies too – we see you, Misfits!) with a design contest like no other! With bold colors and high-energy style, the world of JEM offers limitless potential for amazing design and we can’t wait to see what fans and artists can come up with. Show us your Synergy, and you could win amazing prizes plus have your tees produced into official JEM merchandise!

Samantha Newark is renowned amongst fans across the globe as the voice of Jem/Jerrica in Jem and the Holograms. The English-born, American-raised singer has performed all over the world in genres as diverse as country and big-band, performing alongside Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton and the Los Angeles Pops Orchestra, among others. In addition to Jem, she’s lent her voice acting to other cartoon classics such asTransformers and Steven Spielberg’s feature film Hook. She continues to maintain close ties to the Jem fan community at conventions and online, while performing her own music which has been featured in numerous shows including Gossip Girl, The Vampire Diaries, America’s Next Top Model and more. She currently lives in Nashville, Tennessee where she just released her brand new album, Somethin’ Good.

Bethany Fong (aka “Betty Felon”) is a journalist, an aspiring stylist/designer, and a self-proclaimed “Jemologist.” As a Jem girl since childhood, the show greatly shaped and influenced various aspects of her life, from fashion to feminism; she even wrote an academic analysis exploring the feminist aspects of Jem, entitled Jeminism! While she adores The Holograms, she is definitely a Misfits groupie at heart. Bethany is now the Superheroic Sartorialist at Comics Alliance, where she covers fashion related to comics and pop culture; she also runs her own popular Tumblr blog entitled Fashion Tips From Comic Strips, focusing on the convergence of comics and fashion. You can follow her on Facebook, and on Twitter at @lesvillainettes.
