There’s actually a pretty cool story behind the Marilyn Monroe collaboration too, as this one is sanctioned and is similar to a shirt Johnny made years ago that Marilyn’s people weren’t made aware of back when JC would sail close to the wind in terms of what he could get away with regarding copyright.

Welcome to Notorietees, a new column here at Hide Your Arms that will chronicle “problem” shirts that fall a bit further afield from the general programming you’ve grown accustomed to. Our first controversy conteeversy (groan…) wrestles with the sticky nature of identity and authenticity. NYC & Company, “the official marketing, tourism and partnership organization for the City of New York,” has partnered with Aéropostale on a product range that celebrates city agencies such as the NYPD (sample embedded below).

The program’s goal are moderately laudable; a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the T-shirt collection “will benefit the New York City Police Foundation and the FDNY Foundation,” but as critics have noted there’s one glaring problem: the tees are manufactured and screened in, gasp, Central America. You may be aware that there was a film made last year about Bullying in U.S. schools that has been released recently (to a bit of a furore about it receiving an R rating, effectively stopping the people it’s about from seeing it, which was later changed to PG-13 after a few edits). As yo would imagine there is also a campaign around the film to help raise awareness for bullying, the impact it can have on people’s live and to try and stop kids from being horrible to each other.

Kate Upton has provided her (very pretty) face to front the campaign and has also produced a PSA about bullying which you can see above. Why is this on HYA? Because I thought it would be good to mention a serious issue for a change, and because every other site seems to get to write about celebrities so why shouldn’t I?

Motorbikes scare me. The thought of riding one scares me, the thought of hitting one whilst I’m driving scares me, even them being behind me as I’m driving makes me nervous because I know that they are usually waiting for the next opportunity to pass me. I think that part of this stems from a guy overtaking me on his bike and then me finding him trapped under a car on the next bend, so I think I’m quite justified in not seeing the value of moving very fast with minimal protection.

However, some people are a lot more brave/foolhardy than I am, and that’s their choice and things will always be that way, so they might as well look good doing it. The leather jacket you can see above first came into production back in the 1930s and remained as an integral part of Lewis Leathers range until the middle of the 1960s, which is a lifespan that most designs don’t enjoy today. Steve McQueen was a fan of the jacket, picking it up whilst The Great Escape was being filmed, and he wore it in 1963 during the 500 mile Greenhorn Enduro race across the Mohave desert. Lewis have now decided to bring the jacket back into production and have reproduced the original in painstaking detail.

As my opening paragraph suggests, I don’t know much about motorbikes, and the clothing for them remains just as much of a mystery, but I would assume that a jacket like this can be worn both on and off your bike, and whether you’d want to risk wearing a £675 leather jacket whilst riding your bike is a whole other question.

This faux info-mercial has been doing the rounds on the tee blogs recently but it’s taken me until now to get around to watching it (I’m so busy blah blah blah). It’s a lot of fun (the Anna Faris bits are especially funny) and I’m always happy to see Mr. T gracing screens in any form. Being in the UK I doubt that I’ll ever be able to judge if it really is the best tee of all time, but who knows with HYAs ever expanding list of contributors.
