Margin London at HideYourArms

by Margin London on December 17, 2012

Margin London at HideYourArms

Margin London has been kindly invited to contribute to HideYourArms. We’ll be posting some news about up-and-coming labels that will be exhibiting at Margin in February 2013, which takes place on the 10th & 11th, but firstly we think we should introduce ourselves.

Started back in 2002 as an affordable platform for new designers, Margin is the longest-running independent trade exhibition in London. The show presents designer women’s and men’s tailoring and accessories, as well as streetwear for men and women, to invited store buyers and press.

The humble tee has long been a starting point for numerous labels, and we’ve seen many an exhibitor start off with a t-shirt offering which has grown over the seasons to include a full range of clothing. Supremebeing, Lazy Oaf, Seventyseven, Dephect, YourEyesLie, and many others all started at Margin with tees before growing their stockist base and extending their range to include clothing, bags, jewellery (or jewelry for Americans!), and hats.

Margin has been providing a launchpad for brands to meet with key buyers and press for 10 years to date, and 2012 marked a decade of exhibitions.

hideyourarms10yearbookmargin london Margin London at HideYourArms

To commemorate the occasion, a limited-edition 10 year book was printed for visitors to the show, but it’s also available to download as a PDF or as a super-interactive book for iPad. The iPad version features extensive galleries of previous seasons, as well as videos, and can be downloaded here.

Here’s the link to posts where HideYourArms mentions Margin including brand updates from when they last visited (well overdue for a revisit but Andy & the HideYourArms London correspondent are returning in February 2013!).

Margin is an intimate showroom exhibition in a white gallery space in the heart of Central London, and the only tradeshow in the UK where buyers and press can discover new & emerging design talent (most making their debut launch).  When we say “NEW”, we don’t just mean new to Margin, we mean brand-spanking, never-been-seen-before, new!

hideyourarms margin london Margin London at HideYourArms

Since the exhibitions first started back in 2002, Margin can lay claim to providing the successful trade launch-pad for many brands such as Chateau Roux, Your Eyes Lie, Supremebeing, Dephect, Emily & Fin, Miyson, 1 in a 100, Missmilne, Worn By, Ashley Marc Hovelle, Humdrum, Worn Free, Sugarhill, King Apparel, Terratag, Lazy Oaf, Famous Forever, and Ruby Rocks, as well as the UK launching point of overseas brands including Silas, Upper Playground, Tank Theory, Eastpak Apparel, Loreak Mendian, Syndrome, Al & Alicia, Gama-Go, Mimobots, Double Goose, Stereo Sound Agency, Diamond Supply Co, Urban Originals, and Uzi amongst many others.

hideyourarmsintrothumb Margin London at HideYourArmsMargin has welcomed key stores to the exhibitions since first launching in 2002; from online players like ASOS, My-Wardrobe, and Urban Industry; multiples such as Ark, Joy, Beams, and Ships; department stores, such as Selfridges, Harvey Nichols, Liberty, House of Fraser, Psyche, Fenwick, El Corte Ingles, Galleries Lafayette, & Engelhorn Trendhaus; as well as the key independents Margin is renowned for, including Colette, Hip, Sakis, Wood, Royal Cheese, Natterjacks, 290sqm, Coggles, Market, Atoo, My Yard, Donuts, Caliroots, and Get Cutie, to name a few.

Margin has welcomed numerous stylists and fashion editors from magazines including Vogue, Wad, Elle, Wallpaper, Arena, i-D, FHM, Esquire, Cosmopolitan, Vice, DJ, Flux, WWD, Drapers, Sportswear International, and Sport & Street; as well as contributors from directional blogs such as BNTL, Coolhunting, Hypequest, Slamxhype, Hypebeast, and, of course, Hideyourarms.

Daily Tees & News Roundup for November 4th

pacman mario t-shirt

I like the concept but I’m not too into the style of the artwork in this Pcamn x Mario mashup tee at TeeFury today. It looks more like a comic (and a well illustrated one, let me be clear) than a t-shirt design.

Worn Again: Windbreakers made from a Virgin hot air balloon

3855092341 4268d0d8de Worn Again: Windbreakers made from a Virgin hot air balloon

First off, Worn Again is a damn good name for a company making clothing out of Virgin hot air balloons, admittedly they’re in something of a niche, you can probably count the amount of companies doing that on one hand finger, but they got there first and they probably got the best name, though of course virginity-pun-based business named are very much welcomed, encouraged even, in the comments.

They aren’t particularly cheap (especially for second-hand fabric!), but they look good and you can’t deny that the idea is very cool.

Albatross jacket by La Merde

by Andy on November 14, 2009

La Merde Fall 2009 Men Jackets Hoodies 1258117896752 480x214 Albatross jacket by La Merde

I don’t think you need to be French to know what this label (which is actually part of the No Star Clothing group) is called in English. I may have derided Slut clothing earlier in the week for their choice of name (surprisingly they haven’t thanked me for that review yet), but with La Merde I can see how it works, their name is French, and therefore classy, but the translation is pretty cheeky, which is a lot like their clothing.

Costiness=$165 Available from La Merde.

CupcakesBlog Windbreaker3 480x319 A damn fine looking windbreaker from Johnny Cupcakes

The Johnny Cupcakes Juggernaut rolls on with yet more “hey, that’s not a t-shirt” items. I wasn’t too into the ties that were released recently, but then again, I write about t-shirts, so when would I ever wear a tie? This windbreaker though, this I can get into, I love the colourway, and the subtle cupcake camo makes it interesting without being over-the-top on the bakery-love.

stussy madhectic afdicegear jacket 00 480x336 Stussy & realmadHECTIC & AFDICEGEAR have the galaxy in their jacket

A three-way collaboration? Hot stuff!

What I really like about this jacket is that it’s so normal on the outside, and then there’s this totally crazy interior to it that most people are never going to see, unless you’re the kind of person that likes to open up their coat a lot… possibly in a park… at night… to women… and in that case having a cool jacket is probably the least of your concerns.

If you want this jacket, then I’m afraid that you’ve not got much chance unless you can make it to the Stussy store in Harajuku (a crazy/awesome part of Tokyo) and lay down ¥73,290, which is, wait for it, about $790 dollars.

P®LKAD©TS collection by Wrongwroks

by Andy on December 6, 2008

4036 415x640 P®LKAD©TS collection by Wrongwroks

After an usually long amount of time between releases, Wrongwroks has dropped this great wind breaker, along with a matching backpack, tote bag, hat, and camera bag. Yes, you can cover your body from head to toe errr waist in polkadots!

I really like the look of all the items, but I don’t think I could quite pull off wearing them all at once. There’s lots of cool little touches on them, like the custom WR zippers, double thickness hood on the windbreaker (to help the hood stand up when you’re wearing it and not flap around), little ® and © symbols breaking up the pattern, and plenty of adjustable straps to keep everything tight.

I’ve put loads of more detailed shots into the gallery.

Okay, this parka is in no way cheap, but hot damn it looks good. I really like the way that when the hood is down (shown in the gallery) it kind of looks like a scarf, with those little tassles at each edge, and yes, I know that’s a really odd thing to pick out.

cbr 412w 3 426x640 Deerhunter hoodie by Coardboard Robot at 80s Purple

Whilst we’re browsing the 80s Purple store, I thought I’d point you towards this hoodie. If you’re a really old school reader of HYA then you might remember me posting this hoodie in 2006 and 2007. The posts still get a surprisingly large amount of hits (usually from spammers), but its no longer on sale at the buy links on the old posts, so I thought I’d post this new link as 80s Purple still have stock, and because its still a pretty cool hoodie, the bullet on the zipper is a great touch. Oh, and its fake fur, in case you were wondering. I know that celebritee day has been and gone, but in the gallery there is a picture of Jessica Alba wearing this hoodie, which is, y’know, a thing.

I’ve turned into a big fan of Obey ever since I bought one of their coats in Hong Kong back in February (which I near-inexplicably haven’t posted here). They’re reasonably priced, high quality, well cut, and just look generally damn good, as the coat above attests. I can almost guarantee that it’ll keep you warm in winter too, I know my one certainly does.

Vans x Boost Mobile Jacket

by Andy on November 4, 2008

andreaswiiggpagepairing2 480x250 Vans x Boost Mobile Jacket

In collaboration with Boosted, Vans Outerwear is proud to introduce the Vans x Boosted Program. Designed for fast and easy communication on the mountain, the program is available in the Grunt Insulated LTD Jacket and the Down Supreme LTD Jacket. The jackets are embedded with Boosted branded Bluetooth technology that seamlessly links your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone and favorite MP3 device. The stereo headset allows for convenient use on your mobile phone while listening to your favorite tracks, without interrupting your ride.

How cool is that? I know that there are other brands out there that have put bluetooth technology into their jackets before, but I still think its really cool, and a nice looking jacket too. I’ve haven;t snowboarded much before, so I’m probably not the best to judge, but how often do people make calls when they’re on the slopes? I guess that using it to play mp3s would be pretty awesome when you’re snowboarding though.

Woodburners coat by Sitka from Hoodie People

by Andy on October 10, 2008

Okay, I’m going to try again with hoodie People (the people who sells hoodies), hopefully this time I’ll get the price right!

I love, love, love the brass clips closures that go over zip on this coat, they really add something to the overall look of this coat, I don’t know why, but I feel like the brass makes the coat seem as if would keep me warmer than if they weren’t there, enough though I know that makes no sense at all. The braided leather hood drawstring is a nice touch too.

Costiness=$143 (although when I bring it up in FireFox it tells me $72.14) Buy it at Hoodie People

Winter Jackets from Original Fake

by Andy on October 3, 2008

I saw these jackets by streetwear label Original Fake on HighSnobriety (amongst a zillion posts about sneakers and logo tees) a few days ago and really liked their look, especially with the subtle integration of the Kaws ‘X’, it doesn’t get more subtle than black on black!

Unfortunately the chance of you picking up one of these coats is pretty darned slim, seeing as the HS blog post only mentions them being released at a single shop in Japan. I see this kind of thing all the time in the streetwear world, releasing products in maybe one or two stores when there’s worldwide demand for them, and it seems pretty odd to me, I know that keeping things limited helps to hype the brands and their products, but it does seem like an awful lot of effort to design and produce items only for so few people to be able to actually buy them.

Skull and Bone raincoat by Kidrobot

by Andy on September 22, 2008

4346 default l Skull and Bone raincoat by Kidrobot

Byron dropped a tip my way about some new hoodies up on sale at streetwear giant KidRobot, pointing out this one as his particular favourite, and whilst I’m all for bright colourways, I think that one goes a bit further than I’d be willing to. However, I do really like their rather-expensive but rather-awesome raincoat, or ‘Plastic Jacket’ to use KRs own parlance. If this was a hoodie I’d probably be slightly unsure about buying and wearing it, but I think people can get away with a lot more when wearing something designed to combat the rain, as if the public can justify any design as long as they think the person wearing it is just wearing it to protect themselves from the wet, meaning people can wear all the crazy designs that they’d secretly love to in the dry.

Autumns over in Australia!

by Andy on September 16, 2008

2764090488 e8644be09c Autumns over in Australia!

I’d really like to pat myself on the back for such a great post title, bravo me, bravo Andy, you devilishly handsome man.

See, the reason why that title is so awesome is because Autumns is the name of a web store in Australia that sell great brands like Beautiful/Decay, Obey, People Like Us, and Tank Theory. Autumn is also a season (you Americans call it ‘Fall’ for what I presume is a dumb reason… oh), and since its actually Spring in Australia, clearly Autumn is over in Australia. I guess you could also say that Autumn hasn’t been yet, but that would make my post title seem less awesome, so stop ruining my fun you over-thinker!

Autumns have only been around since early August, so if any of you Aussies haven’t checked them out yet, head on over, because I’ve heard that you can sometimes struggle to get stuff shipped over to you with some online stores in the US and hopefully Autumns can help you with that problem.
