A blog about hoodies & t-shirts, with news from the independent clothing world

Check out Glass Boutique’s blog for some of the better entries to their design competition, I’m pretty impressed by the quality level. I’m guessing that they aren’t getting the same level of interest and publicity as the big guns like Threadless and DBH, this could be a good opportunity for people who are new to the t-shirt design scene to get some experience in the design competition world.

Its times like this that I really wish that I knew how to design t-shirts, because I’d really, really, like to see Rage Against the Machine, but they seem to sell out everywhere that they play. But luckily for Brit designers, Teetonic have teamed up with T in the Park to give you an opportunity that money can’t buy!*

All you have to do is design a tee for the music festival, which I presume is pretty simple**, and if your design is chosen then you’ll win 2 weekend camping tickets for the very sold out festival (the lineup for which includes The Verve, The Chemical Brothers, Rage Against the Machine, REM, The Prodigy, Aphex Twin, Justice, Ian Brown, Primal Scream, MGMT, Hot Chip), a two man tent, two sleeping bags, two roll mats, five of the competition winning tees, and £100 in Teetonic vouchers.Considering this tee will probably be bought by thousands of festival-goers, I think that the prize package is actually a little light, but I guess that if you’re a t-shirt designer then being able to say that you designed an official tee for one of the UKs biggest music festivals would be pretty good for your portfolio, but some cash to cover your expenses at the festival probably wouldn’t have gone amiss. The competition is open for submissions until May 30th.

*Well, it can, if you’re willing to pay through the nose for a ticket on eBay.

** Kidding, kidding.

It’s still a lovely day here in the Lakes, so I’m still just copy and pasting news items:

Allmightys.com has launched a mini contest to win two free t-shirts from their store. Whatever it is they want to know!

    How to Enter

Simply write about why you think patterns are great or not in the form of a comment to this post. Please write at least one sentence, thats all you have to do! The contest begins now and one winner will be chosen by Allmightys Team and announced Monday, May 19th of 2008.

    Contest Prizes

Two free t-shirts of your choice from their store!

    Schedule

Contest Begins: Monday, May 5th of 2008
Contest Ends: Monday, May 19th of 2008

I don’t really visit Allmightys enough, they’ve got some well-known artists contributing designs and producing tees that equal or better most other design competitions, yet they don’t seem to get much coverage in the blog world. Just so we’re clear, your comments for the contest aren’t to be left on HYA, they are to be left on an Allmightys blog post, which can be found here.

One of the great things about j3concepts being the new blogger at LaFraise is that he makes some great illustrations to go with posts, just like this one that he’s done for the LaFraise x Popdeck competition. Here’s the details:

This time around the contest is with Popdeck and it will commence NOW!!!

If your design is choosen you’ll get one skateboard with your winning design, one tshirt with your design and 1500 Euros. Now, along with your loot, your winning skateboard design will be sold on Popdeck in a limited run of 20 and will be sold as a tshirt on laFraise in a limited run of 500.

Also the runner up (2nd place) will get their design custom printed on their very own skateboard (a one of a kind item).

Submit your design between May 5th - 19th to the “POPDECK” category.

If want to participate and sign up for this and you’re American, just put your country as UK for now (there’s no US option) and they’ll sort it later, as a few people were confused about that. More details can be found here.

I’ve just spotted that Josh Spear are running a mimobot competition too, but this one requires a little more creative thought. You need to go to this page and leave a comment discussing what the mimobot in the picture are doing, just write a little story. There was only been 10 comments when I wrote this post, so you’ve got a decent chance of winning, as long as you get your entry in before May 5th.

Glass boutique are running their second annual t-shirt design competition (CCTV Stares, the winner of the first competition, I reviewed) with a first prize of £250 cash and £150 in GB vouchers up for grabs. As is de rigeur, all the accepted designs will be voted upon and the design with the most votes will be the winner, with a couple of runners-up being decided by a panel of judges. There doesn’t seem to be any theme to the contest, so go crazy. Check out the competition details here.Glass Boutique also have a sale going on at the moment where some items are up to 50% off, since GB carry some premium brands this could be a good chance for you to grab some chic on the cheap.

GearCrave, a blog all about manly stuff that manly-men buy, are giving away 25 tees from super-awesome design compeitition Design By Humans. Usually with these kind of things you’ll tell them your size, get what you’re given and be happy about it, but this giveaway has a little extra treat that you actually get to choose which tee you win.

To qualify for a free t-shirt from DesignByHumans, you must sign up, choose, and comment. Here’s how:

* Sign up for the GearCrave email newsletter. (you can do so here)
* Choose the shirt you want to win at DesignByHumans.com.
* Comment on this page and include a link to the shirt you want to win.

The contest is running until “Sunday, April 27th 2008 at 11:59p.m.”, I don’t know what time zone that is though, so I’d suggest not dilly dallying and leaving a comment now before you forget.

Here’s their blog post all about it.

Instrucables, a sort of how-to/DIY site that I may have mentioned in the past, is hosting a contest all able T-shirt hacks. I know there are lots of smart people out there that have major skills when it comes to making a t-shirt look a lot less like a t-shirt, and whether you’re interested in adding your idea (what? there are people that don’t use a t-shirt as a strainer when making jam!) or just looking for a bit of inspiration, its worth a click through to the entries. The prizes do seem to be somewhat lacking, but I don’t think this is a major Instructable contest.Instructables T-shirt hacks contest

[Note: I’ve never used a t-shirt as a strainer when making jam, though in an emergency situation it may well work]

Quicktees: Spring Leap

Springleap beta homepage

Springleap is (yet) another design competition, excpet this one is from South Africa (I don’t think we’ve ever had an SA company on HYA before). You know the deal, tee designs get submitted, voted on (that starts April 1st on SL), and eventually winning designs are printed and sold (which should happen at SL in May).

The site design is pretty cool, and the prizes are decent (I’m a fan of designers being paid on a per-tee basis on top of a lump sum, even if it isn’t much per tee), and there is a focus upon community that isn’t seen in many other design competitions, but a design competition is only as strong as the talent in its community, so we’ll have to wait until April 1st to see what kind of design quality is available to be voted on.

Springleap

Design By Humans, the hotter than hot design competition, have launched ‘Design For’, a new feature which I believe will be occurring monthly in which artists design tees based on a certain subject or theme for an entity such as a band, brand, or person. I’ve never heard of the band, but apparently Temposhark are the ‘next big thing’, so what the devil do I know. There is an inflated prize compared to usual, with the top prize being worth more than $1400 in cash and prizes, with several smaller prize packages coming beneath that.
