A blog about hoodies & t-shirts, with news from the independent clothing world

I was about to write a post about how it was stupid for Amorphia to hold their Oktoberfest sale in September (it would have been hilarious, trust me), but then a little alarm bell went off in my head, which was swiftly followed by the thought “Andy, you’d probably better google this otherwise you’re going to end up looking like an idiot… again.”

So I checked it out, and whaddyaknow, Oktoberfest is held in September! And the reason why is almost interesting (except I’ve found more than one explanation)!

The sale is in the form of a coupon code, OKTOBERSALE08, which will get you 15% off your order (as long as its above $25) at Amorphia Apparel, Science!, and Teach the Controversy.

Y’know, just last night I was wondering what had happened to Oddica, they just kinda went quiet after showing so much promise (and so many great designs) in their first year of existence. Well, that’s all being rectified, and we can look forward to seeing some new designs from the land of Odd once again in the near future.

For now though, you can get back in the Oddica mood by taking advantage of their $10 sale. Tees are $10, hoodies are a ridiculously reasonable $20, and polos are $18. All are printed on American Apparel blanks, so you know its a bargain, although stocks of some sizes and designs are fairly limited. The sale will run until September 15th.

Love & Tug, the clothing brand that probably has a doppelganger in the Far East that sells ‘massages’ rather than t-shirts, are running a summer sale at the mo, and the prices are pretty darned tasty. £5 for the ladies and £8 for the guys. That’s good, but consider that they were £25 just a few weeks ago, yeah, the deal looks even better now, right?

The designs have a celebrity slant to them, three tees feature Pete Doherty, Kate Moss, and Lindsay Lohan, which I’m not all that interested in to be honest, I quite like the designs themselves, but I just wouldn’t want those people to be on my chest, except for maybe Lohan… and perhaps Kate Moss, but the further Pete Doherty is away from me the happier I am. L&T also have a great design that riffs on the familiar ‘I [heart] NY’ tee, but instead of NY, it’s ‘rehab.’ If I were them, I’d post one of those off to Amy Winehouse quick, the tabloids would love it!

I don’t wanna get all Lynne Truss on you guys, but the slogan on this t-shirt is quite clearly a question, and what do questions have? Question marks. Otherwise, how would you know what was a question… ?

My pedantic grammar concerns aside, this tee is classic Local Celebrity. These guys really have the faux-80s look down. From the colourway to the slight vintage look on the white text print, to the ridiculously retro palm tree scene behind the car in all its tri-coloured glory, and of course the car itself is an icon of 80s excess, further enhancing the mood set by the design.

As I’ve mentioned in previous Local Celebrity reviews, I believe that LC create some of the finest quality t-shirts that I’ve come across. Ever. They’re incredibly soft, the prints don’t fade, the tees don’t get out of shape and they fit me just right (they’re a little shorter in the body than an AA tee). This latest example is no exception, top quality all the way. I know that sounds like an infomercial, but I really am very impressed.

Wrongwroks headed out to Taiwan recently to take part in a show called Real Fake. The show exhibited works by three artists, Stay Real, Kea, and of course, Wrongwroks.

Alongside the exhibition of printed works there was also a tee release. Some people arrived at 7am in the morning to ensure they could pick up the new black Dorabob tee by Stay Real, and it didn’t even go on sale until 1pm! The tee was limited to 100 pieces, and sold out in 20 minutes (though there are now a few available on the WR site), so I guess turning up early was actually a pretty good idea. Refreshingly, fans were allowed to take pictures in the exhibition, which is something I like to see, because who are you really harming if you take a picture in a gallery?

Oh, and Wrongwroks has released a couple of really cool hats too.

I’ve gone a bit picture crazy with this post, so if you click through for the rest of the entry (RSS readers might have the whole thing without needing to click through) then there’s a pretty big gallery for you to peruse.

I think this tee would work best if you’re the guy (or girl) in your group of friends that is known as ‘the t-shirt guy’, as if you every one of the tees in your vast collection was worn in the hope that it would lead to someone falling for you, but its pretty funny whether your wardrobe looks like an American Apparel warehouse or not.

Oh, and as is often the case with t-shirts from webcomics, this one is based upon one of their strips.

Ground Defenses by Glennz

Glennz: Hey Andy, are there any themes that will pretty much guarantee getting on HYA?
Andy: Well…. ummm… I’m pretty much obsessed with anything to do with Space Invaders even though I haven’t played the game for about 10 years.
Glennz: How very odd, so you just like those funny mosaics?
Andy: Yeah, pretty much…
Glennz: So… if I make a fairly oblique Space Invaders reference then you’ll be down with it?
Andy: Down with it? I’ll probably be so excited by it that I end up writing a really weird post where I pretend we’ve had an IM conversation about t-shirt designs.
Glennz: Wow, that is weird, oh well, I’ve got to go back to my t-shirt design laboratory where I have a team of scientists analysing pop culture references for their hilarity content.
Andy: Cool, xoxo.

I think that the thing that drew most people to itself. was the fantastic glove pocket tee, and designers were probably drawn in by the possibility of a $4000 cash prize for submitting a winning design, but if you took a closer look at itself. then you would have found a very promising site with some excellent designs.

Initially, itself.’s tee designs were fairly subdued affairs, single colour designs printed onto white tees. Recently though, their design competition has resulted in a couple of rather more colourful winners, but I still think that their first wave of offerings has a lot of charm about them, and ‘more tape?’ is no exception. It’s simple, it’s fun, and I have absolutely no idea what it means, if its meant to mean anything, and as I’ve mentioned in the past, that’s how I like it. The original version had stripes running down to the hem, but I think it looks a lot cleaner and executes the concept better with a few less stripes.

itself. don’t rely on a third party such as American Apparel or Continental Clothing to produce their tees, they use a custom shirt that they’re really proud of and with pretty good reason too. If you click through on that last link, you’ll see why they like their tees so much, a wide and loose neck, thin ribbing on the neck, as printed tag rather than a hang tag that might be slightly irritating. These things all show that they’ve looked at what they would like to wear, and then seen that vision through. I’m sure they also used to claim that they dipped all the tees in a special wash of love and joy (or something along those lines), but I can’t see it on the site now. The tee is indeed very soft, and the fit is really nice, ever so slightly shorter and ever so slightly thinner in the body than an AA tee (at leas that’s how it felt, I haven’t checked the figures). I’m not in love with the neck though, wide necks aren’t really my style, they make me feel like Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, but it isn’t exactly so big that it would put me off from buying the tee. In terms of the print, I was worried that it wrapping around under the arms would make it feel a bit constricting, but thankfully that isn’t the case with the water-based ink print.

Flickr Finds: Kiss Troopers

I know that everyone is going gaga over the new Star Wars x Marc Ecko line that is doing the rounds at the moment, but I found another collaboration (presumably not quite as official) on Flickr that I thought was really cool. Oh, and I’m sure you won’t be surprised to find that this photo was taken at Comic Con.

Usual caveat: this picture is listed as ‘all rights reserved,’ but hopefully the photographer (earthdog) won’t mind me showing this awesome tee to a few more people.
