A blog about hoodies & t-shirts, with news from the independent clothing world

douche1.jpg

I’d like to think that HYA is one of the few places on the internet where I can switch between writing about environmental issues in one post and then move onto douchebags and their popped collars in the next.

On April 29, 2008 our boy Rex Vanderwoodsen set the Planet Douche World Record for the most popped collars worn at the same time by an individual. He did wear 23 Attus polos, popped all 23 collars, and he did take home the GOLDEN PIG AWARD.

I’m presuming that this isn’t actually a world record, but its still a funny little promo for their polos. Karl over at Tcritic is offering a $100 Threadless gift certificate to anyone that can beat the mark of 23, check out this blog post for more details and get your entries in quick since the competition will probably be closing today.

It’s getting told about events like this that make me wish that I lived down in ‘that London,’ (although scenery like this usually makes up for it).

Straight from their mailout:

eBoy, the innovative and seminal pixel art pioneers are exhibiting at Concrete Hermit in May. eBoy is a pixel art group founded in 1998 by Steffen Sauerteig, Svend Smital and Kai Vermehr. From their Berlin studio they create re-usable pixel objects and take them to build complex and extensible artwork. Their work makes intense use of popular culture and commercial icons, and their style is presented in three-dimensional illustrations filled with robots, cars, guns and girls. Their unique style has gained them a cult following among graphic designers worldwide, and they have worked with among others, named brands and companies such as Coca-Cola, MTV, VH1, Adidas, and Honda. They were also involved in creating the album cover for Groove Armada’s 2007 studio album Soundboy Rock.

Entire cityscapes, rich in detail have been created for London, New York, Berlin, Tokyo and this exhibition sees the latest city to get the eBoy unique visionary panoramic treatment: Los Angeles.

There will also be a chance to see the development of the Peecols – eBoy’s series of toys. These innovative toys have become highly collectable, and there will be the rare opportunity to see the Blockbob prototypes and special limited editions of the figures. Exclusive eBoy prints, t-shirts and products will be available at the exhibition.

The eBoy exhibition runs from 9th May - 30th June. Concrete Hermit Gallery, 5a Club Row, London, E1 6JX. Open 10am – 6pm Tuesday-Sunday.

Beams T in Hong Kong

022908_140332

I think a sign that t-shirts are taking over my life came in Hong Kong wen I was excited to spot an Beams T, the much-collaborating Japanese tee label, and one of their famous t-shirt conveyor belts, in a mall on a street in Kowloon (they also have a larger store in Kowloon Tong, but even I won’t travel on 3 trains for 40 minutes for t-shirt conveyor belt).The tees weren’t exactly cheap, but they were nicely designed by names that I actually recognised (although owning the Beams T book probably has something to do with that), and they’re a really cool brand that can happily sit in any tee junkies closet, so I recommend you check them out if you get a chance.

I spotted this Hong Kong-based brand on Flickr a few months ago and forgot to post about them for some reason. I realise now what that reason might be, I don’t know how you actually buy the stuff. I’ve found their website, but I can’t work out anything past that, and not just because I can’t read Cantonese (I have a phrasebook, but that’s of no help as I’m not asking them where a restaurant is). Even by clicking around I can’t really achieve anything, so if you can work it out then I’d appreciate someone making a comment, but if not, just enjoy the pictures.

Glennz: 3 new designs

Team Photo by Glennz

I neglected to tell you about Glenn Jones’ (better known as Glennz, who has had many tees printed by Threadless) new tee store a few weeks ago when everyone else was mentioning it. It’s not that I don’t like the designs, I just forgot to do it, but hopefully I can make it up to you by posting about the three newest designs that went on sale at his store a couple of days ago.
Haunted Housework by Glennz After Hours by Glennz

My fave is ‘Team Photo‘, it suits Glennz style really well, ‘Haunted Housework‘ is pretty funny and works well as a tee since there’s still a lot of people out there that love Ghostbusters, but I’m not really a big fan of ‘After Hours‘, possibly because I’m more of a pirate person than ninja person, though the image is pretty funny.

People that hate costume style tees, move along; people who were expecting something hooker based, move along; people that enjoy having a little fun with the clothes layering, take a gander at this. I think it would be really cool if you coupled this up with a blazer/sports jacket, I doubt that the illusion would be that effective, but it would still better than the ‘classic’ tuxedo shirt.

Rope Stripe Hoodie by Sailor Jerry

I could yak on for a couple of paragraphs about this hoodie, but they’ve done a good job with the blurb, so I’ll let them take it from here:

In case you don’t know it, horizontal stripes are an old school sailor thing. Men swabbed decks, shouted out whales, and had on-board barefisted boxing tournaments in these stripes. So we used them on a hoodie along with a Sailor Jerry clipper ship. You could leave your balls at home and still be a man when you wear this hoodie.

“Leave your balls at home and still be a man,” that’s what I like about small brands, they can get away with saying the things that larger brands wouldn’t dare.

I think we all know that I’m a lover of puns, I’ll use them whenever I can, no matter how bad they are and how much they make my friends groan, I guess you could say I’m a pun addict (almost as much as alliteration), but you also might have noticed that I rarely write about clothing that has a pun-based design. They usually make me groan, and if they do make me laugh I feel a bit guilty about it because I’ve always been of the opinion that puns are just a cheap laugh when it comes to tees, but I guess that’s just snobbery, puns can be funny, people like them, so why should I just neglect such a large section of the tee-world?

Exercising Demons by Vintage Vantage

The Vintage Vantage team have come up with a great vintage-style image here. It really has the feel of an illustration that you’d find in an old book from the 70s that tried to teach you the proper techniques to use in a workout… except its some dudes from the underworld that are trying to ‘max the envelope’ and sculpt their guns.

Exercising Demons by Vintage Vantage

Vintage Vantage know what they’re doing when it comes to quality, you’ll struggle to find anyone else that comes close to them for trying to reproduce an authentic vintage-style t-shirt. The tees are soft and pleasingly stretchy if you need them to be, with a fade on the print that has more of a vintage-look than most distressed prints that you see, although I guess that might be because the image itself has a vintage illustration style to it. I found the tee to be a little bit long for my tastes, but since it is pretty well fitted and stretchy it wasn’t billowing around, so I didn’t find it too much of an issue. From my experience of the last batch of VV tees I received, they stand up well to repeated washes, although if you get oil on them whilst eating fried chicken then you might struggle to get it out, but admittedly that’s not exactly a regular tee test!

Sleeper hoodie by Burton

I know I’ve written about the Burton Sleeper hoodie in the past, but when I on my trips to-and-from Hong Kong last month (and yes, I will stop mentioning it all the time… soon) and realised that the Sleeper hoodie might have eased the unpleasantness of 11+ hours in economy class (even with a new spare seat next to me). The problem I had with the original version was that it had a big outline of a plane on it, which I thought would look kinda silly when you were actually on a plane. This version has a load of passport stamps on it, which I guess I have the same problem with as the plane, but at least you’d actually need to be a lot closer to it to realise what the pattern is of.

For those who are unaware, the sleeper hoodie is cool because of this:

No more crying babies, stiff neck, lost tickets, swampy arm pits or annoying fluorescent lights in your face. Inflate the integrated neck pillow in the hood, pull down the hood¿s light shield, crank up your new age mix or pop in your ear plugs, then pop some sleeping pills. Next stop nirvana. Travel as you know it will never be the same.

* 80% Cotton / 20% Polyester with all over tonal passport print. - Interior Jersey Lining
* Removable, Inflatable Neck Pillow
* Snap Out Light Shield
* Removable Eye Mask
* New! Travel Toothbrush Included
* Change and Key’s Pocket
* Zippered, Internal Passport and Ticket Pocket
* Sound Pocket with Headphone Cable - Hidden Stash Pocket with Ear Plugs

Awesome, right?
