A blog about hoodies & t-shirts, with news from the independent clothing world

The pic doesn’t make it particularly obvious, but there are lots of little blue drops of rain printed over the body of the tee, which is fairly clever. I really like the style in which the umbrella-toting woman is drawn, it reminds me of kozyndan for some reason despite not using a similar style, maybe its because of the colour palette.

I’m afraid that I dropped the ball a bit with this one, although since it only seemed to become news on the day of the event then I blame the rest of the clothing blog world for not picking up on this earlier, shame on you, internet!

Here’s what went down, last Saturday, on the last day for voter registration in Nevada, UNDFTD held an in-store voter registration session to try and encourage as many people as possible to get politically engaged. All of the people that registered in the UNDFTD store were given the tee shown above (by t-shirt design God Geoff McFetridge) as a gift. I don’t know how I feel about people essentially being bribed to register to vote (although I guess that just registering doesn’t actually mean that these people will actually cast a ballot), but I do have to applaud UNDFTD for doing their bit and getting involved with the election.

What’s new at Cotton Factory

All that up there is what’s new at Cotton Factory, quite a few fun and funny tees, with subjects running from Lincoln, Planet of the Apes, and Pee Wee Herman to what I would consider as more typical Cotton Factory fare in the from of a tee with a picture of a Yugo car on it and the slogan “Yugo Girl” written underneath, now that’s punnery!

People ask me who my favourite brand is all the time, and I never like to answer them since I’d like to think I have a bit of journalistic integrity (please send all samples to…), and since my moods swing more than a pregnant woman I go on and off certain styles and brands pretty frequently, so there’s no real one answer, but I have to say the Graniph are consistently in my top 5 tee brands, not that I actually keep such a list.

I’m a pretty big fan of Extraverage too, so I guess that this collaboration/commission worked out pretty well for me!

I managed to find both the tees in the Graniph store (huzzah!) for the price of 2,100 yen a piece. Here’s the pink one, here’s the grey one.

What’s new at Artoys?

Artoys don’t just sell lovingly moulded pieces of vinyl, they also have a clothing line called ATZ that just dropped part of its fall collection, and they must have dropped it from a great height, because the designs are making a pretty big splash in the waters around the good ship HYA… that means I like them. Its hardly surprising that I like them considering they got the doodle-King Jon Burgerman on board to do a design for them, as well as some fellow called Superdeux that I hadn’t heard of before but am glad I have now.

I guess that this promotion kind of makes sense, AAITSKI have a lot of t-shirt designs that are based around animals, but seriously, who has ever heard of World Animal Day? And what are we meant to do to celebrate it, go vegetarian (except for bacon, of course)? Hug a monkey? There are far too many ‘Blah Blah Blah Days’ now, and what does it take to make an official ‘…. Day’, can I just claim one, like next Thursday being the International Day of Andy?

I’m really starting to get into Karmaloop’s Daily Loop, the short news show which covers items from the world of streetwear, new stuff they’re selling, technology and regular stories from the news too, basically stuff I’m interested in. I don’t plan on posting it every day, but I liked yesterday’s clip, so here it is, that and any post I write which has “fake Sarah Palin nudes” in the title is blatantly going to be pageview-grabbing-gold!

Video is NSFW for the aforementioned boobies (nothing too graphic though) and some fairly salty language, but you don’t watch videos at work anyway, right?

Winter Jackets from Original Fake

I saw these jackets by streetwear label Original Fake on HighSnobriety (amongst a zillion posts about sneakers and logo tees) a few days ago and really liked their look, especially with the subtle integration of the Kaws ‘X’, it doesn’t get more subtle than black on black!

Unfortunately the chance of you picking up one of these coats is pretty darned slim, seeing as the HS blog post only mentions them being released at a single shop in Japan. I see this kind of thing all the time in the streetwear world, releasing products in maybe one or two stores when there’s worldwide demand for them, and it seems pretty odd to me, I know that keeping things limited helps to hype the brands and their products, but it does seem like an awful lot of effort to design and produce items only for so few people to be able to actually buy them.

Its good to see someone starting their halloween special early enough that you can actually order the items and have them delivered before your pumpkin is starting to rot, and that’s exactly what Lazy Oaf are doing, here are the full details:

I can tick off another aspect of my t-shirt collection, no one had ever sent me a t-shirt with glow in the dark ink on it, so when I was offered another review sample from the gang over at Vintage Vantage I thought I’d indulge my love of clothing that glows and lights up by asking for to send over their design with glow in the dark ink on it, which is appropriately called ‘Glow in the Dark.’

I wore this last Saturday night, and I got at least four comments from the people I was out with (all girls - that’s how I roll!) asking whether it actually glowed in the dark. I assured them it did, but that we’d need to go somewhere pitch black for them to be able to see it properly, needless to say, my ladies can’t be tricked by such lines and I went home alone that evening!

It does glow in the dark though, as the .gif below attests, but the effect isn’t that dramatic, as is often the case with glow in the dark clothing, you actually do need to be in near-complete darkness for the effect to be good and clear. I had thought that it might be quite funny if a t-shirt that has “glow in the dark” written on it didn’t actually glow in the dark, just because of the way that the tee would set you up for something that may or may not exist.

Vintage Vantage have a pretty decent knack for creating a a tee which feels as if it might be many years old, that is to say, they do achieve their aims in attempting to create a tee with a vintage look and feel. The cut of their tees is good too, at a guess I’d say that they’re about as wide as an American Apparel tee, but maybe an inch to an inch and a half shorter, which is a better fit for me personally as I sometimes find that AA tees can run a little bit long. The print quality feels great, I can’t really tell the difference between a regular print from Vintage Vantage and this glow in the dark ink, but since I’ve never had a glowing tee before I don’t know if there should actually be a difference, either way, it feels good.
