It had ALWAYS bigged me that Beautiful/Decay didn’t have their own shop, they had so many great designs (and high quality too, as I mentioned ever-so-frequently), yet they were piggy-backing on the Indie Merch Store. I mean no disrespect to IMS, but it just seemed beneath B/D to be in that position. Thankfully they’ve released the latest iteration of the companion website to the print magazine, and it has a real storefront in it showing off their delectable goodies. Oh, and 10 mystery tees for $80 (and free shipping since it’s more than $75)? Bargain!

As is often the case with HYA, I’m a little behind the times, so that ‘one week only’ actually started yesterday, but there’s still plenty around to get your hands on in the Beautiful/Decay store including their fantastic tees for $15 (the one they sent me remains awesome a couple of years one, great quality), and hoodies at $20, a price so good even I might buy one (sizes are pretty limited on the hoodies).

Really nice new line from Beautiful/Decay, which is hardly a surprise considering they get good artist, and print good tees (this tee hasn’t faded one bit, and I wear it a lot), which is a pretty simple equation for awesomeness. Funny thing is, the pic I’ve used for this post is actually my least favourite of the bunch, despite its obvious wearability, but the e-mail from B/D (who could teach a lot of other brands a thing or two about PR and how to deal with bloggers properly) had this image in it, so I thought I’d just run with this. Whenever I see the term ‘limited edition’ I chuckle a bit, because when you limit something to 1000 pieces it isn’t really limited, especially when you’re new brand that would probably struggle to sell a hundred tees, but Beautiful/Decay really have gone limited with their latest tee of the month, producing just 30 of the design. Here’s their description of it:
September’s shirt of the month just head-banged its way into our online shop! This graphic features an ominously mystical magician casting smokey-sorcery of battle axes, panthers, horses of the apocalypse and more. The color way is an off white ink on a black shirt body. Perfect black-metal scheme for shredder shows, Sabbath-listening, and seances alike! Only 30 of these super-soft shirts made! Conjured into being by the one and only Kyle Thomas, who hand-drew each and every cover of Book 1.
If you’re wondering what all the “hand-drew each and every cover of Book 1″ business is, Kyle literally did what it sounds like, hand drawing a cover to each of the 1,500 copies of B/Ds book. Frankly, I’m surprised he had the energy left to create such a cool tee.

Let’s just file this one under ‘fantastic’, shall we?
With a visual aesthetic ranging from anime and manga, to the French art nouveau movement and traditional Japanese scroll art, Aya Kato transforms a common fairytale or love story into a passionate and vivid art piece.
With the design “Pharaoh,” Kato travels to the sphinx-riddled lands of ancient pyramids to create a royally bearded king transforming in swirling smoke into icons of Egyptian lore, from falcons to jackal heads and beyond. The 200 print run limited edition shirt is on a unique color way that will not be reprinted once sold out- so be sure to order today before it’s gone!

That tee actually made my jaw drop, seriously. Admittedly, not a huge amount since this is isn’t a video of
hamsters eating watermelon (note: that video might be the best 18 seconds of your life), it’s ‘just’ a t-shirt, but boy howdy is it a good. Yes,
boy howdy!
Beautiful/Decay has collaborated with a fresh crop of explosive new talents from the art and design world to create this Summer ‘09 season. As usual, the t-shirt graphics range from bold, iconic graphics to playfully eclectic….but all share B/D’s signature aesthetic of bright, creative imagery that pushes the envelope of t-shirt design. Some talents from their roster include Sakke Soini, Kittozutto, Christopher Gray, Dekore, Oliver Hibert, Clara Terne and beyond.
The whole line is actually really solid, which shouldn’t come as much of a surprise by now, but it bears reiterating; Beautiful/Decay make good t-shirts that have attractive things printed on them.
All are available from the Indie Merch Store, check out the B/D Apparel blog for explanations of the designs and their designers, and the rest of the line can be found after the break.
