A Year of T-shirts

by Mr Four Fingers on January 27, 2013

A year of t-shirts

Well it has been almost a year since I joined Hide Your Arms and I figured, hell, why not recap on the t-shirts that have entered my wonky wardrobe since I  joined. These are a combination of reviews and tees I have bought for myself (what’s the world coming to). It has been great to meet new folk and learn about them and their brand journey, seeing what works and what needs work.

Best wishes for 2013 and I hope to do many more. My thanks goes out to you!

In no specific order (there are a few missing):

Colus

Colus Hunter t-shirtcolus t-shirt

One of the coolest designers I have had the pleasure of meeting (well via the web). I always get comments when I wear one of his designs. You can read a review of Colus here.

1st Tee – Hunter $26

2nd Tee – Amour Propre $26

——

Danse Macabre

Danse Macabre t-shirt

This is one of the weirdest t-shirts in my collection and also one of my favourites. The guys at my work did not notice the design until I showed it to them properly. Now every time I wear this Tee they can’t look at me. Indirectly via a mirror maybe. Danse Macabre have since closed their doors and started a new brand called Wood & Nails. There is a review of this t-shirt if you are interested even though you can’t buy it.

Post image for Colus at Fab

One of my favorite designers and t-shirt brands is currently having a sale at Fab. For the next 3 days, you can grab any or all of Colus’ beautiful black & white tees for only $18. (They’re usually $26) I own all but two of them, so I can definitely attest to their awesomeness. Big, bold, and beautiful prints on super soft American Apparel shirts. Treat yourself to some great design.

Colus – Review of Hunter and Wise Owl

by Mr Four Fingers on May 7, 2012

Colus - Hunter

I’m thankful for being part of Hide Your Arms because every so often I’m introduced to a new brand that impresses me and Colus is one of those very brands. As soon as I saw Colus Hunter design (above) I could feel some deep rhythm stir inside me, something raw and totally awesome. Ok maybe a bit heavy but let me just say that Colus has got skills and has instantly become one of my favourite designers.

I received the t-shirts in a bespoke white envelope with enigmatic eye symbol printing in black . The eye symbol is a device used by Colus used to represent morality. Packaging is the first impression and it’s always good to see the effort. This ‘morality’eye design can also be purchased as a t-shirt called ‘We Are What We Do’. Layered inside the envelope were my two -t-shirts Hunter and Wise Owl (sealed separately) and a mission statement card nicely printed up with a personal note written on the back. I’m a firm believer in personal touches.

Both designs are single colour screen prints on American Apparel so make sure you follow the care instructions properly to get the most from the fabric. We were taking the photographs at night and the flash was popping off the t-shirt making it look intensely white. The designs in the Colus range are simple and bold, Hunter being particularly striking. If you don’t like attention then this t-shirt is not for you.

The fit of Hunter on me is great and the soft fabric feels really good. Craig, featured wearing Wise Owl, says it fits well and being an American Apparel white t-shirt it’s slightly on the thin side as you could see his tattoo faintly. All t-shirts are printed on American Apparel.

I had a good time reviewing Colus t-shirts and focused on being as non-biased as possible which was easy because the product is pretty good. You can purchase one of these t-shirts over at his online store for $26 and you can even check out his latest jewellery release.

Colus Havenga expands his wares

by Matt on May 1, 2012

Post image for Colus Havenga expands his wares

Colus Havenga, one of my personal favorite t-shirt designers and brands, just added some jewelry to his line. Two necklaces are now available at colushavenga.com for $20 each. “rune” and “flora” are simple yet bold. Laser cut from acrylic plastic and hung from a long chain, they’re a great addition to any collection.

Post image for brand new design from Colus Havenga – “hunter”

“black and white. no convention. no visual trickery. this is colus.”

Colus has quickly become one of my favorite designers and t-shirt brands over the last few months. The simplicity yet boldness of his illustrations really caught my attention. I bought 4 of the 7 shirts he originally had available with my first purchase and have since ordered every product he’s put out. I’m happy to announce the release of his newest design, “hunter”. Third of the white on black and ninth of the total shirts, “hunter” marks the 10th product Colus has released. The non-shirt item being a print of his “wise owl” design.

With high quality prints on American Apparel shirts, I highly recommend picking up one of these original designs. You will not be disappointed.

All Colus tees are available for $26 each at colushavenga.com

colus havenga amour propre

Black and white loving Colus have just dropped their latest shirt and it ties in with a lot of their previous work in terms of style, and of course it sticks to their usual colourway.

Remember, you can get 10 off your order with the coupon code HYA10.

colus wise owl print

There seem to be quite a few brands diversifying their portfolios at the moment and releasing prints, and I’m all for it, I often see t-shirts that are ‘art on a t-shirt’ rather that ‘t-shirt art’ so it’s hardly a surprise that designers are turning their popular t-shirts into other items. Hell, I even had posters printed upp and they’re in the HYA store, though I must admit they aren’t selling particularly well (don’t you love me!?).

Colus have released their most popular tee in the form of a limited edition (50 pieces total) 18×24 inch screenprinted print of ‘Wise Owl’, and I think it looks super, I can imagine it framed on my wall and at fifteen bucks it’s pretty reasonable too.

“Amour De Soi” t-shirt by Colus

by Andy on August 5, 2011

colus havenga t-shirt

I know it’s always a bit awkward when I write about brands that also happen to be advertisers on HYA, but I’m proud to have Colus as an advertiser because they’ve got some great shirts that I would be posting about whether they were helping to keep my bank account happy or not, and this latest release is no exception.
