A blog about hoodies & t-shirts, with news from the independent clothing world

Happy Birthday to B

Shirtspotting, the mostly German-language t-shirt blog, has turned one year old, and instead of doing what most of us bloggers do and write up a quick post saying “hey, I’ve been writing this for a year, wow, and people actually read it, cool, thanks” and then move on, Markus is hosting a ‘tee party’. He’s rounded up 15 companies who are each going to give away one or more tees to commenters on his blog.

All you have to do to be eligible is go to this page on Shirtspotting and leave a comment saying happy birthday or something similar, einfache!

(there’s no end date listed for this, so you’d probably be best off leaving a comment…. now)

Here’s another great theme for a design competition. Allmightys latest competition has the name “Future-Past-Perfect”, you may be wondering waht the devil that means. Well, how about letting Allmightys explain:

“…refers to a time that is in the future, relative to another point in the past, but is in the past relative to a point in its future.”

We would like you to think of the future as imagined in the past and how and what we expected to be has become somewhat different. Think future in relation to the past, think memories, challenges, imagination, expectation, disappointment and the future that lies ahead of us. What have we learnt and what should we expect?

Dates:
Competition announced: Monday 7th July 2008
Submission Deadline: Monday 25th August 2008, 23.00 GMT
Voting Ends: Friday 29th August 2008, 23.00 GMT

I’m sure I’m not the only person who thinks its fun to take a look at where people in the past thought we’d be by now. If you’re after some light inspiration for this theme, may I suggest you check out Daniel H. Wilson’s book Where’s My Jetpack? Which is a fun overview of all the technology that was promised to us in the 60s (jetpacks, food pills, moon bases, etc.) which never arrived. Or if you don’t feel like dropping the cash (the book is beautifully designed by the way, very shiny), you could always check out a cool blog I found called Paleo-Future that is all about this subject, and a fun read too. If that isn’t enough inspiration for you I don’t know what is, so go and let your imaginations run wild, because this theme seems like a lot of fun.

As is often the case with Allmightys competitions, €1 from the sale of each of the winning designs will be given to charity, in this case Greenpeace will be receiving the donations.

Read this info (minus my delightful commentary) again at the Allmightys blog, or check out the competition’s dedicated page.

I don’t usually write about the “Threadless Loves” themed competitions, but I really like the idea behind this one since its so open ended and has a lot of potential. Here’s the blurbage:

TELL THREADLESS YOUR STORY

Threadless, Fray.com, Blurb.com and Stephen Tobolowsky Challenge Designers to Incorporate True Stories Into Works of Art

Community-centric tee shirt company Threadless.com is asking designers to turn the true stories of their lives into works of art in its latest “Loves” campaign. To help lead the way, Threadless has partnered up with original, personal storytelling site Fray.com, self-publishing site Blurb.com, and the film Stephen Tobolowsky’s Birthday Party, written by and starring famous character actor Tobolowsky (Groundhog Day, Deadwood, Heroes) as he tells fascinating stories from his life on-screen and off.

Threadless, Fray, Blurb.com and Stephen Tobolowsky are giving submitters the chance to prove that extraordinary things happen to ordinary people, and run wild with this challenge; tell their stories through design. The chosen design could become the cover of Fray’s third volume of tales titled “Sex and Death,” so the design must incorporate these two topics into its art.

“Threadless Loves” challenges give designers an opportunity to flex their skills and design to a particular challenge. Challenges are sponsored and supported by companies relevant to the idea. Previous “Loves” partners include Hot Chip, Moby, MTV’s Human Giant, and the Lomographic Society International.

The designer of the chosen true story will also receive goodies from each partner including a personal subscription to Fray quarterly and two additional subscriptions for friends, $150 to go towards a personal Blurb book, an outgoing voicemail message recorded by Stephen Tobolowsky himself, and an autographed copy of Stephen Tobolowsky’s Birthday Party DVD and poster. In addition, the designer chosen gets $2k in cash, and of course, his or her design on an awesome Threadless tee.

Deadline for entries is July 23, 2008. For more info on the design challenge and all its partners, hit the links below:

It’s a pretty cool theme, the first that I’ve got excited over for a while (although the Loves Lomography one was pretty cool).

LaFraise x Popdeck Competition winner ’salary man’

I’m really, really impressed with the winners of the competition (click through on the link at the bottom to see the rest), but I think that the grand prize winner certainly deserving their 1st place finish. In fact, the field was so strong that laFraise decided to award three extra designers with a €500 prize and a run of 250 shirts with their design on, although I don’t think any boards will be made up with the extra three designs.

WTF is T-Shirt Day? (Part 2)

Hey, I guess we kinda know what it is now.

Things are starting to become a bit clearer thanks to a major overhaul on the T-shirt day website, it’s gone from a plain outline of a tee last week to the fully blown site that you can see in the screenshot. From the looks of things, Spreadshirt will be holding events in Berlin and Boston, giving away about 500 t-shirts both online and off, and they’re also holding a special competition in conjunction with laFraise. It’s shaping up to be more of an event than I rather cynically first expected, so I’ll keep you updated on developments.International T-Shirt Day

WTF is T-Shirt Day?

International T-shirt day… waaahhhh!!!

When I heard that there was such a thing as ‘International T-shirt Day’, I thought two things “what the hell is this?” and “it must be a publicity stunt.” Spreadshirt own the domain (hurrah for whois!), so it could be some kind of publicity stunt, and probably not a ‘real’ international day, like Christmas or Talk Like a Pirate Day (just 126 days to go!), but I know Spreadshirt love their tees, so I’m interested to see how this will go, and what will happen in June 21st, which also just happens to be the first official day of summer.
Now that is a big ass shirt, and it has gold on it, so rappers will probably like it

Part of it, presumably, is linked to this blog post, in which they ask you to send a picture of you wearing your favourite tee and a short story explaining why it’s your favourite tee. And the prizes that are on offer? Well, 5 people are going to win one of those massive tees in the picture above, which have lots of little printed tees on them in all the colours that Spreadshirt offer. Not exactly that wearable for most people, but still pretty cool and very limited (just 5).T-Shirtday.com

It’s still a lovely day here in the Lakes, so I’m still just copy and pasting news items:

Allmightys.com has launched a mini contest to win two free t-shirts from their store. Whatever it is they want to know!

    How to Enter

Simply write about why you think patterns are great or not in the form of a comment to this post. Please write at least one sentence, thats all you have to do! The contest begins now and one winner will be chosen by Allmightys Team and announced Monday, May 19th of 2008.

    Contest Prizes

Two free t-shirts of your choice from their store!

    Schedule

Contest Begins: Monday, May 5th of 2008
Contest Ends: Monday, May 19th of 2008

I don’t really visit Allmightys enough, they’ve got some well-known artists contributing designs and producing tees that equal or better most other design competitions, yet they don’t seem to get much coverage in the blog world. Just so we’re clear, your comments for the contest aren’t to be left on HYA, they are to be left on an Allmightys blog post, which can be found here.

One of the great things about j3concepts being the new blogger at LaFraise is that he makes some great illustrations to go with posts, just like this one that he’s done for the LaFraise x Popdeck competition. Here’s the details:

This time around the contest is with Popdeck and it will commence NOW!!!

If your design is choosen you’ll get one skateboard with your winning design, one tshirt with your design and 1500 Euros. Now, along with your loot, your winning skateboard design will be sold on Popdeck in a limited run of 20 and will be sold as a tshirt on laFraise in a limited run of 500.

Also the runner up (2nd place) will get their design custom printed on their very own skateboard (a one of a kind item).

Submit your design between May 5th - 19th to the “POPDECK” category.

If want to participate and sign up for this and you’re American, just put your country as UK for now (there’s no US option) and they’ll sort it later, as a few people were confused about that. More details can be found here.
