MEKANIK CLOTHING- Bolt Dismay T-Shirt Review

by MissMcFaul on November 25, 2012

You need only to visit MEKANIK CLOTHING‘s website to instantly recognise that this streetwear brand is sleek, sharp and bold with a humorous twist and a nod to pop culture geekdom. So far so good! Launched earlier this year by Istanbul based artist and graphic designer MEKAZOO, the influences of sci-fi, mechas, videogames and b-movies are clearly represented in his work. The tee’s on offer appeal to a love of bold, simple, eye catching urban design which is why (after a really long wait, Turkish postman be slow yo!) I was thrilled when the package below plopped through my door!

(Photo: www.mknk.net)

The parcel contained the tee and a business card (which if we’re getting all “American Psycho” was a nice, bold black and white print on thick, matte card) and a sticker but also a sheet of card printed with a cut-n-build your own toy which was very exciting as I love a bit of scissors-paper-glue crafting! (Pics of crafting prowess below)

(Photo: www.mknk.net)

The tee itself is feels smooth and cool and the tri-colour print pops out against the crisp white background. The image is printed on with precision and has a pleasant texture. Giving it a poke and a stretch also reveals it to be pretty resilient to cracking or peeling which is a problem sometimes when an ink is too thick and becomes brittle, but all MEKANIK tees are and printed with eco-friendly water-based inks, which is a relief to those of us with an eco-conscience!

The smooth, soft feel when wearing is down to the  100% combed ring spun cotton which should assure you of the garments quality as 100% cotton fibre content will never result in pilling or bobbling that you get with polyester blends (it’s also more absorbant, for all you sweaty betties out there) . In fact the quality of the fabric, print and construction should mean this garment lasts and last. The only thing that could possible take it down would be a red wine of curry stain down the front!

Size men’s medium is a good fit on my medium sized partner  but it’s also a nice size for any girls who like a looser “boyfriend” fit.

STYLING TIP: For a chic and edgy urban look, ladies, roll up the sleeves and wear with skinnies, dirty converse (or ankle boots with a heel if so inclined) and some Mr.T necklace application. I also enjoy a good door-knocker chav earring when rocking a tee. Just an idea!

Here is the paper toy before (above) and after construction (below), which was a fun 10mins out of my day and looks cool on the bookshelf gathering dust. MEKAZOO has plans to expand his brand with hoodies, hats and designer toys which I will definitely be checking out.

I really really appreciate a printed back neck label in place of those itchy folded tapes which, I at least, end up cutting out leaving an ugly frayed bit that still tickles! ALL apparel should have the brand and size info sneakily printed on somewhere! #nomoreitchylabelsthankyouplease.

Now, I had a bit of an issue with the creasing situation after wearing it all day and being comfortable and receiving plenty of compliments, I stood up and the front had concertina’d like an accordion and stayed that way all night. Cotton does crease I’ll admit but body heat will usually cause creases to drop out, this extreme creasing could be down to an applied finish on the fabric which kept it so flat and sharp looking in transit and may wear off after laundering a few times.

One last criticism would be that after washing (following care label instructions obviously) the tee shrank 3cm in length and 2cm across pit to pit. While this isn’t a massive change it is worth noting if you’re a borderline size, maybe consider sizing up. This shrinking also caused an issue with slight puckering around the neck and some twisting of the sleeve cuff.

These pictures of sleeve twist were taken before ironing, you (or your mum) could potentially iron the worst of it out but it will always return to this configuration after washing. This is known as spirality which affects jersey fabrics such as this, the only thing that can help reduce this twisting is a more careful approach to the construction of the sleeve WHICH I might add may only affect this particular tee! Yours might have been made by a more skilled machinist!

In summary this is a great tee and MEKANIK CLOTHING is definitely worth checking out. Cool, comfortable clothes for boys and girls! Can’t wait to see how the brand progresses.

Post image for Death Star, a zombie turkey, and ummm, stuff happens at Tshirt Laundry this week

Hey America, just curious, I’ve seen two turkey based shirts this week, are any of you buying turkey shirts specifically to wear on Thanksgiving?

Cute Thundercats t-shirt

At least we can say this Thundercats t-shirt at TeeFury is cute, whether I’d want to wear it…

Very nice from Shirt.Woot. I had a friend that uttered this phrase once, we still mock him for it to this day (in that way groups of guys never forget anything embarrassing about each other.

Metroid meets Boba Fett at RIPT today and it looks mighty nice.

Five famous weapons at Qwertee.

Kong Barrel Co. makes an appearance at Shirt Punch.

I’m just going to presume that this design at TeeRaiders is to do with The Last Airbender (the film with no ending IIRC), and you can tell me I’m wrong in the comments.

Pretty nice from DBH today (oh, and get 25% off with the coupon code DBHSTAFF).

America is ready for Change at BustedTees.

Made in the Now point out that Disneyland Paris is in almost €2 billion of debt as it celebrates it’s 20th birthday.

T-shirt news for January 24th

cat skull t-shirt

Can you imagine if you walked into a house and there were this many cats… it would be terrifying. $10 at TeeFury today.

I know what you’re thinking, this is just yet another t-shirt about imaginary Pinata companies, and when with this pinata meme die? Well, at least this one at Shirt.Woot is based on the 1986 film ‘Three Amigos’.

The Muppets meet Futurama with this Hypnokermit t-shirt at RIPT today.

Daily Tee & News Roundup for October 27th

by Andy on October 27, 2011

lady gaga halloween t-shirt

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a shirt that references Lady Gaga before, so that’s something new from TeeFury.

Yup, the Disney logo is a shirt meme, fortunately the designs I’ve seen so far have been pretty cool, and I’d count this offering from Qwertee amongst that group.

Interesting shirt from Tilteed (that I presume they’ve sold before since they have model shots of it), nice big print on it.

Stupidhurts.us have been cranking out the new designs recently, huh?

Excellent work from former HYA writer Randyotter at Shirt.Woot today, this may well be the cutest penguin shirt I’ve ever seen.

Fun shirt from RIPT today, though of course no one will know you’re wearing it in Winter because you’ll have several layers on top.

Nicely done Portal shirt at The Yetee today.

Pity that you won’t be able to get this 24tee shirt in time for Halloween, I’m sure it could be useful with a few outfits.

Can someone explain the reference on this TeeRaiders shirt/hoodie? Is it referencing an actual event or is it purely invented by the artist?

Lovely starry negative space design by Loviu today, right up my street.

When memes and games collide at Shirt Punch today with ‘Snake in a Box’.

Catch of the Day Tee again don’t have anything on their site, I wonder why they don’t put up a message when they haven’t got a shirt to offer, or why they don’t just run the shirts for another day of sale.

Ugmonk have got a new lookbook that reveals no new tees, but does look pretty.

The Daily Street have a roundup of Johnny Cupcake‘s Halloween release event in London.

Dark Bunny Tees have put a new shirt up for pre-order, this one celebrates The Last Starfighter, and the first 100 orders will also receive a free Space Invaders styled poster.

Glennz has cut the price of all the ‘scary’ shirts in his catalogue to $13.95 until the end of the month.

How to start a clothing company takes a look at the pros and cons of screenprinting vs. direct to garment printing.

Mashable put out an article not-that-long-ago that called ‘10 Essential Tips for Startups‘, and judging by some of the things I get in my inbox I think that quite a few t-shirt companies could do with heeding some of their advice.

A Better Tomorrow must be getting close to relaunching their site, take advantage of the savings on their own shirts (this offer doesn’t apply to brand stores).

Daily tee (and news) Roundup October 25th

by Andy on October 25, 2011

Star Wars t-shirt

Really nice Star Wars design from TeeFury today.

Was this shirt at Qwertee previously on sale there or at another daily site? I look at so many that they blend into one another a bit.

Damn, that is one powerful looking unicorn. $10 today at Tilteed.

Sometimes I feel like the name of a t-shirt is an afterthought, but in the case of “Samurainoceros” I think it was the starting point. Get it at Stupidhurts.us

I’m sure that there will be a large number of people that like this Shirt.Woot design, but I can’t count myself amongst them.

It’s a fun twist on the phrase, but I just don’t like that guys face. $10 today at RIPT.

Cool shirt on insaneetee at Uneetee today, $14.99 as usual, down from $24.99.

I really can’t decide what market 24tee are aiming at, they seem to go from cool-to-lame with invariable frequency.

Another oldie from Loviu.

I would never wear a t-shirt that makes reference to rage comics, but I’m sure that some people would, and Catch of the Day Tee must be hoping they’ll like this shirt.

The latest daily site on the block is called Shirt Punch, they just launched today with this shirt called ‘The Captain’. Tees at Shirt Punch are $10 from this Canadian site (they’re using Canada post to ship tees, so I presume they’re Canadian), and they shirts are silk-screened rather than DTG printed, which is somewhat unusual for a daily site.

The designer of this Shirt.Woot t-shirt e-mailed me to ask for a review, so this must be a weekend shirt since I missed it. It’s still available at Woot, though the price is now $15.

Urban Industry have got a big, big sale on, head on over to see if anything takes your fancy.

Daily Tee Roundup Sept. 26th

by Andy on September 26, 2011

lovecraft cthulu t-shirt

Very cool design from TeeFury today, and good to see Jimiyo making an appearance as the designer rather than the art directory for a change.

Apparently today’s RIPT shirt references Cowboy Bebop, which is presumably something else that I either really missed out on during my formative years or need to get into.

Wow, that’s an awful lot of time-traveling references on today’s tee at Shirt.Woot.

I needed the description to understand the reference on this shirt, anyone got it? It’s from Snatch, and whilst I liked the film this shirt isn’t really doing it for me, there are probably some films that don’t need a tribute tee. Good try though, The Yetee.

I didn’t forget about GraphicLab! I had no excuse though since they sent me an e-mail about this weeks design. It’s pretty cool that they gave ‘Tardis Prime’ a Sonic Screwdriver for a weapon.

I think an error has been made with the promo image, but it’s stll clear that today’s shirt from Loviu is an absolute beauty.

I’m really glad that I’m needing to rag on TeeMinus24 less now, I think they still have some way to go, but they are improving and you’ve got to respect that.

Star Wars AND The Big Lebowski, fairly play Qwertee, you’re covering all the bases today.

Ahhh, now that’s a generic looking rock music t-shirt from Stupidhurts.us. It’s cool and I’d wear it, but you guys know what I mean.

Oh, so ‘reworked Disney logo’ is a trend now? OtherTees

lord of the rings disney t-shirt

Is The Yetee a new site? I haven’t heard anything about them but saw this shirt on Reddit, where it was pointed out that having “The Happiest Place in Middle Earth” written underneath the Disney-esque logo would have made more sense than ‘one does not simply walk in’ and I would tend to agree with them.

$11 today at The Yetee.

disney mickey mouse bloc28 t-shirt

Just as I was typing that title it made me realise that Urban Retro is Urban Retro again, I wonder why they dropped being called Candy Pulse?

It’s quite cool to see an organisation as big as Disney teaming up with cool artists to create interesting shirts, you’d expect that they’d be too worried about letting their very, very valuable intellectual property be toyed around with by an outside influence (though presumably there are massive restrictions on what a designer can do with Mickey), but in this case the design looks great in all three colourways. Pity it’s only available in sizes M & L though.

Pixelated tees are hardly a new concept, but that doesn’t stop this tee with a definitely-unidentifiable character on it from being really cool, good work Reece!

One of the things I noticed on my two trips to Asia in ’07 and ’08 (cripes, I might not make it to Asia this year) is that big brands there like to collaborate with smaller brands, especially in the clothing world. I can understand why Louis Vuitton want to collaborate with Murakami, but why do Hello Kitty go out of their way to engage the streetwear world?

So, why are Disney letting a group of artists, in the form of Bloc28, provide their own take on one of Disney’s most iconic characters, Mickey Mouse?

Disappointingly, I don’t have an answer for you, maybe they just thought it would be cool. The tees aren’t exactly cheap at £24.99 a piece, but if you’re a Disney fan looking for something a bit more interesting than this, then you might want to check them out at Urban Retro.

A new update for Go Ape was worth the wait

by Andy on September 7, 2008

Straight from their mailout:

Good news! Go Ape Shirts has not disappeared. I’m finally all settled in to a new place, complete with an entire “shirt room”. The internet connection here is finally hooked up after over a month of battles with the service providers. I apologize for taking so long to answer some of your emails. We are back into the full swing of things now. “Boo Boo Walker”, “Elliot’s New Friend”, and “Evolver” have all been restocked. Some “Boo Boo Walker” hoodies will be back in the shop very soon. A new design from our friend, Aaron Hogg, has just been released. It’s called “Face of Capitalism”.

Killovision
(one of Hogg’s previous designs for Go Ape) is firmly planted in my list of favourite tees, so I’m glad they’ve got him back for another, and that he’s continued in the same vein, even reusing a few of the design elements from Killovision.

If someone told me that X-Large were teaming up with Disney to produce a tee I’d have thought that someone was trying to sell me knock off gear in one of Hong Kong’s night markets, but no, this limited edition tee is right there on the X Large store, and the design is a pretty cool mashup of both brands too.
