A blog about hoodies & t-shirts, with news from the independent clothing world

ZickZack by Yackfou

Here’s a fun take on a pattern print from the Berliners at Yackfou, and as part of their summer sale season its reduced in price until August 12th. Every week they’re taking a couple of items from their store and putting them on sale, so check back each week if there’s something you’ve had your eye on but weren’t quite willing to part with your cash for.

Scribtee’s Summer Sale (sssss)

The summer sales just keep on coming, don’t they, forcing me to spend my days indoors writing about sales rather than going outside to enjoy the summer, oh the damned irony!

Scribtee are the latest brand to get in on the act, by offering 8 of their older designs (I think they were the first 8 released when the shop was launched) for the rather reasonable price of $15/€15/£10. If you need reminding about this Berlin-based design competition, here’s my review from November last year.

Bloodgold have got your back

I know I go on and on about how I like oversize prints, flashy colours and foil, but I can also enjoy designs that are a bit smaller and subtle, and I think that Bloodgold’s tees fit into that category. The Cologne-based company doesn’t do anything too crazy with their designs, they’re simple and polished, but I really like the way that they integrate neck printing in so many of their designs since you don’t see it on that many tees.

Violent Elegance released a couple of new designs called, appropriately enough, Skull and Pyramid, which I figure is because one of the tees has a skull on it (with Mickey ears? scandalous!) and the other two have a pyramid on them. I like the way that they keep it simple (hey, that’s from the title!) and minimalist, especially with the black-on-black and white-on-white colourways.

All Violent Elegance tees are €32, which is a fairly premium price, but that does include worldwide shipping.

Happy Birthday to B

Shirtspotting, the mostly German-language t-shirt blog, has turned one year old, and instead of doing what most of us bloggers do and write up a quick post saying “hey, I’ve been writing this for a year, wow, and people actually read it, cool, thanks” and then move on, Markus is hosting a ‘tee party’. He’s rounded up 15 companies who are each going to give away one or more tees to commenters on his blog.

All you have to do to be eligible is go to this page on Shirtspotting and leave a comment saying happy birthday or something similar, einfache!

(there’s no end date listed for this, so you’d probably be best off leaving a comment…. now)

Spreadshirt were kind enough to send over a copy of the book they put together along with Zeixs for the posts that I wrote about the recent International T-Shirt Day activities (peep some pics of the Berlin festivities here). Since I’ve got a fairly decent collection of t-shirt related books now I thought it might be cool for me to give them reviews just like I do with the tees.

When I first heard about this book I thought that it was going to be a how-to guide about t-shirt design, teaching people who were new to the industry about what makes a design ‘good’. As I discovered, this wasn’t the case at all, so I guess you could say that the title is a little bit misleading, but if you spend just a few seconds reading the description its pretty clear that this book isn’t about helping new designers, its about showcasing the best designs that have been submitted to Spreadshirt.

It’s a fairly weighty slab of dead tree, it’s diminutive page sizes being more than made up by the fact that there are 670 pages for your perusal. In terms of content, things are kept simple, the opening few pages are what you’d expect from a book about t-shirts, a bit of text about how tees are so prevalent in society now, and now that came to be that way. Once you’ve got the text out of the way we get down to the real meat of the book, the tees. Each page is dedicated to a t-shirt design, sometimes placed onto a t-shirt, sometimes just the artwork, and there’s also the name, location and website of the artist to make sure that you can get hold of the design if you really want it. The book is split into categories (logos, typographic, characters, illustrative, political & pattern) which I guess would be useful if you’re a designer trying to get some inspiration for a project, as long as you keep it at just inspiration, of course!

There’s some really great designs in the book, I’d love to rip out all the pages and stick them on my wall as a massive collage, but there just seems to be something wrong about ripping the pages out of a book that you actually like.

Yackfou’s new store in Berlin

Shirtspotting headed down to Yackfou’s store on opening day to take advantage of that special 50% off one-day sale, and also to snap a few pictures. Google Translate hasn’t done a particularly good job in letting us non-German speakers understand what Markus is actually saying, but from what I can tell, he likes it.Click on through for more pictures.

Yackfou open a shop? Wunderbar!

juni08_flyer.jpg

Do you remember Yackfou? They’re a bunch of Berliners who produce clothes that have a touch of awesome about them, and now you don’t just have to buy those clothes online, you can buy them in their shop (yes, a real shop, with windows and stuff).Well, not quite yet, the shop, located on the Boxhagener Platz, Friedrichshain, in the centre of Berlin, doesn’t actually open until July 5th, and when it does, Berliners, you’re gonna want to head down. On the opening day, everything in the shop is going to have 50% off, which certainly isn’t a price cut to be sniffed at (whatever that means). They’ll also be selling prototype and sample pieces in the shop, which is nice.

Human Nature by kakolak @ Scribtee Weird City by Malota @ scribtee

Scribtee, the design competition offshoot of ShirtCity, have dropped a couple of new designs on us, and guess what? They’re both good!

The top tee is called ‘Human Nature‘ and is by an artist called kakolak (read an interview here), and the lower pic has ‘Weird City‘ on it, which was designed my malota. Both are printed on American Apparel tees and available for €22 now.
