Liberty by Akomplice Clothing [Review]

by Andy on January 27, 2009

As this review is auto-posted to Hide Your Arms (almost everything you read on here isn’t written on the same day as it is posted), I will beam sat on the train down to London to have the final interview at the American Embassy, hopefully resulting in me receiving a visa meaning I can finally fly to America to begin my internship, so I thought it would be appropriate to review a t-shirt that features that most American of icons, the Statue of Liberty.

Obviously, this isn’t your Grandma’s Statue of Liberty (I’ve always wanted to use that phrase), it is a Statue of Liberty that I’m sure some elements of America would agree more accurately represents the country that they live in today, even if change came to America just last week. Perhaps in time Lady Liberty will be able to swap her gun for the ice cream that she usually holds aloft.

On the back-right should of the tee there is some text (check out the gallery for close-ups) about how everyone in America is a ‘gangsta’ and that Liberty comes by the way of the gun. I don’t really think that it’s too necessary to the tee, for me, it just re-emphasizes the message when it’s already pretty clear what is going on.

If we were to chat quality, I’d have to give this tee a thumbs up. The tee feels lovely and soft, and whilst I think that the printing method is just regular old plastisol, it doesn’t feel too heavy despite being a pretty big print. Since Akomplice are a streetwear company, their sizes do run a fair bit larger than most of the companies that usually get reviewed here on HYA, I don’t think they’re massive though, the tee is probably a regular size and I’ve just become too used to wearing slim sized American Apparel tees, so I’d only recommend ordering a size down if you want a tight tee.

There is a little tag on the sleeve with Akomplice’s stylized logo on it. I quite like the way the white tag contrasts with the black of the tee, but you may hate it, in which case it shouldn’t be too hard to cut it off or pull out the stitching. There’s also a custom Akomplice hang tag in the tee, which looks rather nice.

The Pistol by Tank Theory @ Karmaloop

by Andy on February 13, 2008

Pistol t-shirt by Tank Theory @ Karmaloop

Now this here is a really clever design, I love the way that the head seamlessly transitions into being the butt/handle of the revolver, and as ever, there ain’t nothing wrong with putting some gold foil onto a design, especially a gun, it kinda makes it feel like we’re in an African dictatorship!

Oh, and there’s an oversized, Thank Theory branded bullet on the back right should, which looks kinda badass since its in gold too, if it were in white then it would probably just look like a bird crapped on your shoulder.

My baby shot me down…

by Andy on August 28, 2006

Ok, I know I seem to post about Backseat Kiss almost as much as Naive or Oddica, but if they keep kicking out awesome hoodies, I’m not really in a position to stop posting their super-cute model now, am I?

You all know that I like to see innovation in placement with my cotton goods, so when I saw a six-shooter holstered in the pocket I was immediately impressed, and the “official backseat kiss cowboy badge” looks pretty nice too, incorporating the robot logo into a classic icon, though if I were to be particularly pedantic I’d have to say that it was a sheriff’s badge, yes?

I’m sure that some of you might have some reservations wearing a hoodie that gives the appearance that you’re carrying some kind of weapon, especially since you apparently can’t wear certain items of clothing in parts of America now, but you know what, forget it, if you’ve got a cowboy/sheriff badge you deserve a screenprinted handgun!

Sabre Style Therion 666 Hoodie

by Andy on June 16, 2006

I may not speak German, but I am fluent in style (if I do say so myself), which is why this hoodie from Sabre Style has found its way onto my screen.

I do like it, but I feel that with a few alterations it could be much better. They’ve got a great looking design there, but it just seems a bit small, something with that kind of detail really deserves to be in the center and wayyyy bigger. That and it seems to be printed using vinyl (could be, and probably am, wrong), perhaps a water-based soft ink with a sliught fade would have been more appropriate considering the cowboy-esque design?

That said, it’s still a good design, and it’s printed on American Apparel so you know it’ll feel nice.
