What’s new at Wrongwroks in July

by Andy on July 7, 2009

7-5-3

Time for another of our extremely regular Wrongwroks updates. I’ve been wearing their hats at every opportunity whenever the sun has come out over the past few weeks (hats are great for lazy guys with annoying hair), so you could literally say I’ve had Wrongwroks on my mind recently. Not hats in this update, but a few new “hey, is that a rip off, oh, right, it’s a parody” tees for your consumption.

new-credit-crunching-t-shirts-from-disturbia-_1246017140687

I think that the irony police might be on the lookout for the Disturbia crew after they’ve released these designs (which you can buy, by the way), about excessive spending. I really like the ‘Keep Buying and Stay Silent’ tee, which is another clever riff on the ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ poster that you see so many variations of nowadays, and the biker-style track jacket looks pretty badass (the wraparound bit in the neck is a nice touch, but the Mastercard parody isn’t really working for me I’m afraid, it just reminds me of ‘funny’ tees you’d see in a souvenir shop on holiday, though it’s safe to presume that Disturbia’s take is produced to a much higher quality, so don’t let me hold you back from spending, spending, spending!

SplitReason have released 4 new shirts, 3 of them are good, and the 4th is a logo tee which is perfectly fine, but not in the same realm as the others.

W’s Burger Tee from Wrongwroks

by Andy on January 25, 2009

1-16-4

Can anyone tell me which brand it is which inspired the hat that the gorgeous Nikkie Hsieh (Wrongwroks latest model) is wearing in this pic?

I get the feeling it’s probably a fast food brand, but I can’t put my finger on which one. The hat is available on it’s own, or you can get a hat and tee combo.

Run DC, another Barack Obama tee

by Andy on January 23, 2009

stackt-rundc

We’re probably coming to the end of Obama tee mania, but I think that this shirt is one of the cooler ones that I’ve seen over the last few weeks, apparently it was a giveaway at the 2008 BET Awards and got a load of buzz from that so it is now being sold in limited quanitities. How limited is anyone’s guess, but if you’ve been holding out for an Obama tee, this one would look better in your wardrobe than most of the others out there.

Dead Presidents x Thriller = Oh My God!

by Andy on January 15, 2009

rb-presidents-big

I was gonna put OMG, and then I thought “no, this tee is far too awesome to make do with an acronym, it deserves the use of real words.”

I’ve seen a few Thriller homages in my time, but zombified Roosevelt, Washington, Franklin, Lincoln, and Jefferson have taken things to the next level.

Bar Trekkin’ by Go Ape Shirts [Review]

by Andy on November 24, 2008

Much like my last review, you can’t actually buy this one either (sorry, again), but this time it isn’t because the tee being limited edition, it’s because Go Ape Shirts got a friendly letter from CBS, who own the copyright to Star Trek, asking them to stop selling the tee. To me, this is quite clearly a parody, and there are lots of shirts out there for sale that are far more blatantly ripping the intellectual property of Star Trek, but Goliath tends to beat David in these situations, which is why I ended up receiving one of these tees. Even if you can’t buy this tee, it does serve as a good reminder that Go Ape consistently release some fantastic designs and have the print quality to do them justice.

Vote John McClane!

by Andy on September 29, 2008

I’d vote McCain/McClane over McCain/Palin any day, not that it matters since I can’t vote in the election anyway.

R2D2/Star Wars x Haynes Maunual mashup tee

I’m not sure how well this one will translate since I get the feeling that Haynes manuals might only be a British thing. For the uninitiated, Haynes produce manuals for lots of different cars (pretty much anything with an engine in it) so that people can do jobs on there cars that would otherwise have required a potentially costly trip to the local garage. I’ve got one for my little red beast (it looks just like this one, except a bit more battered and bruised), and it has helped me identify problems with it a few times. I really like the idea of Haynes mashup tees, they’re ripe for parody and famous robots or spaceships from science fiction provide decent fodder for them, as this R2D2 design attests.

A Bathing Abe by I Came From Nothing

A Bathing Abe by I Came From Nothing

I don’t own much Bape (okay, just a mook and a small fleece blanket), but I still like to keep my eye on A Bathing Ape since they do help change the direction that streetwear heads. Being parodied is par for the course when you in the top of your field like A Bathing Ape are, and this ‘A Bathing Abe’ tee is a really great example of it. I guess that if you wanted to go with a ‘funny’ angle then the designer could have put a towel on honest Abe’s head (in that almost magical way that only women can achieve for some reason), but I guess that would have taken away from the purity of the parody, and probably worsened the tee overall, which I guess is why I write about tees and don’t design them!Costiness=£10 Link (also available in a badass gold foil on black colourway)
