More than 100 Doctor Who T-shirts

by Andy on April 14, 2011

doctor who t-shirts

Hide Your Arms has gained something of a reputation for creating epic t-shirt lists and obsessing over films and TV shows to find t-shirts. When it was first suggested to me that I write a list of Doctor Who t-shirts (if you have an idea for a list send it in) I thought that it might be a tough ask since I don’t watch the show. I don’t have anything against it, I just already spend too much time watching TV shows, though since practically everyone says it’s good I probable should give it a go. Still, since the fans, or at least one fan, wanted a list of Doctor Who t-shirts, I made it my mission to hunt them down.

As you’ll find in the list there are quite a lot of good Dr. Who t-shirt designs out there, but nowhere near as many as with Star Wars, which is hardly surprising considering the popularity gap between the two, so I haven’t been able to create a list on the epic scale of the 200 shirts in the Star Wars list, but I think the current 119 designs is still fairly sizable. It’s also quite telling that many of the designs riff on the same themes, which suggests to me that Doctor Who designs haven’t been explored too deeply by the more creative t-shirt designers out there. You’ll also notice that a lot of shirts come from a few different retailers, which is frustrating for me since it looks like I’ve only looked in a handful of places, but the truth is that I’ve searched long & wide and not come back with many stores that sell Dr. Who t-shirts. Whether this means we will see more in the future (or that I have simply not discovered a treasure trove of excellent designs), who knows.

As ever, these lists take an awfully long time to put together, so if you would like to share the list with anyone via Twitter, Facebook, StumbleUpon, Delicious etc. I would be very grateful, your sharing keeps new people visiting the site, and that in turn means that I am able to keep writing them.

teefury on tv, big deal!

It’s cool seeing brands from the t-shirt community getting some exposure to a wider audience, even if that audience won’t necessarily know what they’re being exposed to.

I know I don’t mention TeeFury all that often, but even I recognise the two designs that turned up on House (another show that I’m told I should watch but have never seen a minute of) and on My Life As Liz, which is a show I’ve never seen before and don’t really have much intention of doing so.

180730 10150092252148775 6401318774 6370250 3450071 n 480x358 TeeFury and Seibei get some prime TV time
30 Rock however, I am a big fan of, so it’s balls-out awesome that Judah Friedlander was spotted sporting one of Seibei‘s more iconic designs, the Sandwich Dinosaur. If my memory serves correct, David met Judah at some kind of festival, so perhaps that’s where the tee came from, or maybe David sent them a bunch of shirts, I don’t know but it’s seriously cool. In other Seibei news, you can now pick up a random mystery tee and 5 pins for the bargain price of $9.99.

red beer cup t-shirt cougar town

A dude from Greece (well I presume dude, Greek names can be tricky like that) dropped me an e-mail asking if I could help him track down the shirt worn by Travis(?) in Cougar Town series two episode five. My tee-fu failed me, so I’m throwing it open to the global collective hive mind* to hopefully find somewhere that it can be bought, or at least something similar. I assume that the red cup is a beer one that is ubiquitous at American parties, or at least ubiquitous at American parties in films.

* If you get the late-90s American sitcom I’m referencing with that phrase, wow, you watch a lot of TV.

the it crowd t-shirts

Well, just one shirt in this episode, and one that Roy has worn in the past too, so it was a pretty easy find. Good episode though, loads of one liners, I especially liked Roy complaining about “have you tried turning it off and on again?” being some kind of catchphrase for him, and Moss shouting “we’re going to die!” after finding out that the robot was running on Vista.

I think that this is one of my favourite t-shirts that’s been on The IT Crowd, it’s geeky, it’s non-sensical, and it’s genuinely funny, so I guess that in a way it’s a bit like The IT Crowd! The blue shirt with the whale on it is by Dinosaur Comics and can be bought from TopatoCo for $17.50 + shipping.

For a little bit of an extra to go with this shorter than usual post, a commenter on the last IT Crowd post shared a link to a cool page on the Channel 4 website showing the IT Crowd basement with loads of tagged items from the set, definitely worth checking out if you’re a fan.

*Welcome to everyone that’s visiting because of @Glinner tweeting about the site, be sure to take a look around, check out the older IT Crowd posts (I’ve covered just about every episode of the last few seasons) and I’m also running a competition to win $100 of clothing from JackThreads that you may want to enter. Thanks for visiting!

The IT Crowd t-shirts Series 4 Episode 4

As a side note before we get into the traditional meat of The IT Crowd t-shirt roundups, after listening to Pirate FM in Cornwall when I was on holiday me and my girlfriend were inspired to watch The Boat That Rocked a film inspired by the pirate radio station Radio Caroline that operated from a boat (it was in international waters and therefore not governed by British law). I was under the impression that Pirate FM was the legit ‘child’ of Radio Caroline, but I actually completely wrong. Still, it’s a good, funny film, and I thought I’d mention it because Chris O’Dowd and Katherine Parkinson (Roy & Jen in the IT Crowd) are both in the film, so you guys may want to check it out.

Anyway, on with the show (almost literally), the first tee worn by Roy was just a plain grey shirt, naturally, I’m not going to track down the brand, if you want to be just like Roy go and get a grey shirt from Primark or American Apparel.

The second shirt had already been found for me by @RustyBransteinX which did make my job rather a lot easier. The OMFG t-shirt comes from ThinkGeek and the acronym is for the little-known Ontario Mega Finance Group the investment company that lots of teenagers apparently enjoy talking about. The t-shirt is $15.99 and it can be purchased here.

it crowd tshits s4e4t3b 480x270 The IT Crowd T Shirts: Season 4 Episode 4 Italian For Beginners

Roy’s third shirt of the evening was a bit more troublesome to hunt, and not just because of Roy’s hot girlfriend being on view. It was a dark scene, but after taking about a dozen pictures and playing with the levels on them I managed to make out the writing “don’t even think about tagging me” which is actually pretty good advice for those people that think it’s fun to tag photos on Facebook of their friends in compromising positions. The tee is available from Balcony Shirts for £12.50. As I do try to be a bit of a completist with these things, I had a quick look around for the other tee in this pic, the one with the crossed guitars worn by the orphan. I haven’t been able to find the same tee, but I have found what I think is the same graphic on an apron at Spreadshirt, and with it being spreadshirt to can customise these thing to your heart’s delight, and that includes putting the design on a pink t-shirt with black print.

it crowd tshits s4e4t4a 480x270 The IT Crowd T Shirts: Season 4 Episode 4 Italian For Beginners

Fourth tee of the night was easily recognised as Roy has worn it before, “Nothing is any good if other people like it” is a Diesel Sweeties design. However, I can’t find the shirt anywhere in their store, so it seems as if they’ve stopped selling it. Still, there’s plenty of other cool shirts in their shop. Also, how good was this scene? There isn’t nearly enough mashed potato based comedy on TV.

And that’s your lot for this episode, I will post episode 5 tomorrow, and then you can expect the episode 6 recap (last episode of the season, sob) early next week.

IT Crowd t-shirts

Indeed, last night something did happen, Graham Linehan (aka @Glinner) tweeted about my IT Crowd t-shirt posts, which was then retweeted by rather a lot of people, causing what I think is the largest amount of traffic I’ve received on a Sunday, giving the site a bit of a meltdown (until I got home and cranked up the resources), and presumably putting a bit of pressure on me to continue my IT Crowd shirt posts now that a lot more fans are aware of them. Fear not new readers, I shall continue, and this week I’ve got links to all three of Roy’s tees so that you can get your hands on them.

Roy’s first tee of the week was immediately obvious to me as I had written about it back in May. Even though the most visible text says “let’s say you’ve gone back in time” the shirt is actually called “Time Traveler Essentials” because it explains what you need to do if you were to travel back in time. It’s a very clever and funny shirt, and it’s yours for $18 at TopatoCo.

DSCF0355 Medium 480x360 The IT Crowd T shirts: Season 4 Episode 3 Something Happened

Shirt number two in the episode is a bit of a tee design classic, having been featured on the show before and on many a blog. Some people have point out that it doesn’t really work as a Venn diagram, but I’m able to look past that and just enjoy a cool shirt. Elitism can be bought for $16.99 at Diesel Sweeties.

DSCF0357 Medium 480x360 The IT Crowd T shirts: Season 4 Episode 3 Something Happened

Last shirt of the week (excluding Jen’s shirt for the band Sweet Billy Pilgrim, who I presumed were fictional since I don’t keep up with what’s cool in the music world, but are in fact real, though apparently don’t have a keyboard player) picks up on the keyboard cat meme, but makes it almost acceptable in my cynical eyes by giving it an 8-bit makeover, since we all know that making something 8-bit makes it cool. The tee is £16.21 and can be purchased at MySoti.

I won’t be able to cover episodes 4 & 5 of this season in a timely fashion because I’m going to Cornwall on holiday, and writing about t-shirts will be the furthest thing from my mind. I will cover the shirts worn in the episodes when I get back, you’ll just have to be patient about it.

it crowd t-shirts

A very fine episode of The IT Crowd this week I felt, apologies that it’s taken me a week to post aobut it, but good things come to those who wait… mostly, because I haven’t been entirely successful in finding the tees featured in the episode, but hopefully people reading this and fniding it via search engines will be able to help out. The pics for this post are a bit weak because I was just taking shots of my TV screen, but you can all still tell what’s what so I’m sure it won’t matter too much.

The first tee of this episode has actually been on the show in the past (season 2, episode 5), I didn’t know where to buy it then and I still don’t now unfortunately. Help a guy out in the comments?

DSCF0292 Vga 480x360 The IT Crowd T shirts: Season 4 Episode 2 The Final Countdown

Second tee of the week was fairly easy, as it was featured last week during the season opener. I thought I’d give Roy back some of his dignity and not post a pic of him wearing the shirt whilst sat on the toilet (as if being a window cleaner wasn’t enough!). Buy the Ring t-shirt for £19 at Dark Bunny Tees.

DSCF0293 Vga 480x360 The IT Crowd T shirts: Season 4 Episode 2 The Final Countdown

Third tee of the week was an easy one for me, not because I knew where it came from, but because someone on Twitter found it for me, brilliant. It’s a pretty funny tee, I’d never seen any ROFL=Rolf jokes on the internet before, but I bet we’ll be seeing them around in the future off the back of this. Buy the ROFL t-shirt from RedBubble for £14.81.

DSCF0294 Vga 480x360 The IT Crowd T shirts: Season 4 Episode 2 The Final Countdown

I struck out with this Metallica parody t-shirt with the Statue of Liberty on it. Any ideas? I think that the text says ‘infectedur’ or something like that, Google is turning up nothing.

DSCF0295 Vga 480x360 The IT Crowd T shirts: Season 4 Episode 2 The Final Countdown

Fifth tee in this episode was quickly recognisable, since it was created by one of the people that has been on HYA since the early days, Enclothe. The shirt is called ’451′ and is of course a reference to the book Farenheit 451, or possibly just a reference to the point at which paper burns. Either way, something is being set on fire. Buy the firefighter t-shirt from Enclothe for $20.

DSCF0296 Vga 480x360 The IT Crowd T shirts: Season 4 Episode 2 The Final Countdown

The last t-shirt this week was one I hadn’t seen before, but was fairly willing to bet was a ThinkGeek design, and whaddya know? I was right. You can buy the “I don’t work here” t-shirt that Roy wore from ThinkGeek for $15.99.

The IT Crowd t-shirts Series 4 Episode 1

Took me a little bit longer to get around to watching the show than I expected, what with the Brussels trip and all, but it was a good episode to open this fourth series of The IT Crowd, not amazing but a enough laugh out loud moments to keep me happy and looking forward to the next episode.

The first tee from the episode can be seen at the top of this post, it says “NO.” and it’s from Think Geek. It’s not exactly the best tee in the world, but I presume that there’s quite a lot of people in IT departments across the world that wear tees from ThinkGeek, so there’s a nice nod towards realism there. If you’d like to express the word “NO.” emphatically on a t-shirt, the tee is $15.99 and you can buy it here.

ITCrowdS4E1T2 The IT Crowd T shirts: Series 4 Episode 1
It was pretty easy to work out where the second tee was from, since I’d been tweeted about it days before. The shirt is based on The Ring, the Japanese version presumably, not the not-quite-as-scary American version. It can be purchased from Dark Bunny Tees for £19, but be quick because they’ll only sell 100 of them and then it’s gone, and judging by the amount of people that visit HYA looking for IT Crowd shirts, it might be gone fairly soon.

ITCrowdS4E1T3 The IT Crowd T shirts: Series 4 Episode 1
The last tee of the night was a riff on the familiar “Home Taping Is Killing Music” graphic that has been around since the music industry became afraid of people. There are a lot fo designs around based on this image, but I’m fairly sure that this t-shirt from 8ball is the same one as in the show, and you can pick it up for £17.50 (and not just in olive).

I wonder who will turn up next week!

roy it crowd t-shirts

Regular fans will be aware that in the past I’ve tried my darnedest to let you know what t-shirts Roy has worn in The IT Crowd, the Channel 4 geek comedy written by Graham Linehan, who was responsible for Father Ted. In fact, it’s fairly likely that some of you reading wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the IT Crowd, since HYA has become one of the best destinations to find out what tees have been worn by shirt-loving Roy on a weekly basis.

The show returns to TV screens on Friday June 25th, I’m actually going to be away next weekend in Brussels so I’ll miss it, but fortunately it is already available to watch online at Channel 4′s site, so I’ll bring you a roundup some time next week, but for now I’ll tease you with this screencap sent to me from a rather excited Dark Bunny Tees.

BigBangTheoryTheGorillaExperiment500pxjpeg 480x293 Sheldon wears Thinker Clothing on the Big Bang Theory again!

The Big Bang Theory may not be a high-class comedy, it’s basically a normal sitcom except with jokes that are made a bit cleverer*because they’re based on science, but I would call myself a fan, and I rarely miss an episode. I’m sure that Thinker Clothing never miss an episode, becuase they probably tune in to see if they’re on the show that week, seeing as Sheldon (or at least Sheldon’s stylist) seems to have bought their entire range of tees.

*yes, I said ‘cleverer’.

paddys irish pub1 480x433 Paddys Irish Pub T Shirt for Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia Fans

I am a huge fan of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, and not just because now I can go “ah, been there!” whenever they’re doing a scene on loncation in the city, so it’s no surprise that I like this tee even though the design is pretty standard stuff, though I guess that’s half the point as most bars which have merchandise rarely have great looking stuff.

The tee is $19, but you can get a whopping 5% discount at Loops & Pluto with the coupon code TWITTER5, which is a coupon they give to their Twitter followers, but the way I see it, if you tell a tee blogger about a coupon code, you’re pretty much asking for it to be posted, even if it won’t even knock a dollar off this shirt (better than nothing though, right?).

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder Costume Hoodie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder Hoodie by 80sTees

The chances of you seeing me wearing this hoodie from 80sTees are on the lower end of ‘slim to none’, but that doesn’t stop me thinking that it’s awesome, and that it would be a good go-to for a costume if you only had a few hours notice for a fancy dress party. Can you imagine just walking down the street wearing this?

This meme needs to die. I can let it slide on a TV show (especially a great one like The Office) because they film them months ahead, so it probably was funny when they shot the scenes, but I’m just sick of it now. [Image Source]

the big bang theory t shirt Dangerously Red Dinosaur by happyfamily (as worn by Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory)

I fear that I may be twitterising my titles, as there’s basically not much more information that I need to give you to understand this story… though I guess that is what a title in meant to do!

I’m a fan of the Big Bang Theory (both of them), and the way that Sheldon and Leonard can often be found sporting tees from the kind of t-shirt companies that are often found on HYA (aha, a TV show that gets us that isn’t The IT Crowd!). Often I have to do a bit of detecteeve work to find the shirts in question, but in this case happyfamily were proudly proclaiming there national exposure, which made things an awful lot easier for me. The tyrannosaurus shirt can be seen in episode 17 of season 2 of the show, also know as ‘The Terminator Decoupling’.

Costiness=$16 Available from happyfamily’s Etsy store

The IT Crowd: S3E4 FAIL!

by Andy on December 18, 2008

pict1111 480x381 The IT Crowd: S3E4 FAIL!

I have sad news to report friends, after a few good weeks writing about this seasons IT Crowd episodes, I’m afraid this week is a bit of a failure. After spending a while trying to work out where Roy’s tees came from (which is why this post is a few days late compared to usual), I’ve only managed to find one of the three tees.

The first tee worn by Roy in the episode (pic at the top of this post) had a bit of a Japanese feel to it, seeing as it has some Asian looking text on it and what looks like a series of characters beneath it. I don’t even know where I’d start looking for this tee, so I throw myself open to your suggestions.

pict1106 480x604 The IT Crowd: S3E4 FAIL!

The second is pretty easy, in theory, it’s a design with a slogan of some kind on it, usually I just have to Google that, and voila, I remain “that guy who find The IT Crowd shirts.” Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to work out what the slogan says, I’m pretty sure that the final word being said by the character is ‘time’, but that isn’t much help without the rest of it. It has the look of a webcomic style t-shirt, so maybe someone out there might be aware of which webcomic it is, and then I’ll have some breadcrumbs to follow and hunt it down.

pict1105 1 480x335 The IT Crowd: S3E4 FAIL!

I’m glad that it was the last tee in the show that I managed to find, because then you’ll go away from this post thinking “sure, that sucked a bit, but at least he found one,” instead of, “dammit Andy, you’re such a loser, and you keep forgetting to link to things in blog posts!”

The Overlook Hotel, for those of you who arewondering why Roy would be promoting a hotel instead of his usual geek-chic, is the hotel in The Shining. The tee is available from Last Exit to Nowhere and costs £17.50.

pict1112 480x360 The IT Crowd: S3E4 FAIL!

Something else I noticed in the show was that Roy appears to be a fan of a blog called “Why, That’s Delightful” which is of course (of course!) written by the show’s writer and creator Graham Linehan. Except, he was actually looking at something else.

theitcrowds3e3t shirtroundup 480x359 The IT Crowd S3E3 T shirt Roundup: Damn these electric sex pants!

From watching the show, I had presumed that this weeks tee scavenger hunt for The IT Crowd was going to be a tough one, but in reality I managed to hunt down both of the t-shirts Roy wore in the episode.

If you haven’t seen the show, you’re probably wondering why there is a topless man at the top of this post. Well, I don’t want to give away the plot, but Roy ends up shirtless for quite lot of the show, which is probably great for those of you that are into not-particularly-toned Irishmen (not that I’m anything to write home about!).

pict1099 480x394 The IT Crowd S3E3 T shirt Roundup: Damn these electric sex pants!

The first tee Roy wore in the episode was this white shirt with a number of small hand drawn graphics on it and the text “a series of tubes” written underneath. Any geek worth their salt, knows what that’s a reference to, and for those of you that don’t, it’s a quote from corrupt former-Alaskan Senator Ted Stevens, who was explaining net neutrality to the Senate. The tee is by Think Geek, costs $9.99 (though as it is on its ‘last chance’, it probably won’t be reprinted, so be quick) and can be bought here.

pict1104 479x351 The IT Crowd S3E3 T shirt Roundup: Damn these electric sex pants!

Roy then went off being all topless and stuff and we didn’t see him wearing another tee until the closing credits in which he was struggling to wrestle his jacket off an elderly woman. The was a quick shot in which I got a good look at the tee, which had the words Ludovico Technique written on it. The Ludovico Technique is of course the “fictitious drug-assisted aversion therapy from the novel and film A Clockwork Orange.” A quick google told me that the tee came from British label Last Exit To Nowhere, costs £17.50 and can be purchased here.

A couple of new tees at Found Item Clothing

by Andy on December 4, 2008

greasy tonys shirt front l A couple of new tees at Found Item Clothing

I’m pretty annoyed at myself that this is going to be the first post about Found Item Clothing on HYA. I’ve been a big admirer of their for years, yet inexplicably never wrote about them, they’re one of my ‘rainy day’ brands, if I cleared out my inbox I was going to write about them. They’ve been a ‘rainy day’ brand for more than two years now!

For those of you that are unaware, Found Item Clothing faithfuly recreate t-shirts that are worn by people in movies, usually totally awesome movies from the 80s and early 90s like Tron, Revenge of the Nerds, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (though impressively they managed to keep themselves away from the ‘Save Ferris’ design). I really like that concept because it takes liking a film to a whole new level, if someone sees you wearing a tee with the A-Team logo on it, you know they like the A-Team, but if you see someone wearing a tee with ‘Napoleon‘ written on it, you know they like the A-Team.

They’ve dropped a couple of new tees, the one pictured above was worn by Booger in Revenge of the Nerds, and also has a back-print that you can see in the gallery. The second tee, also in the gallery, has ‘Life Sucks and then you die’ written on it, and was featured in Teen Wolf.

Y’know, actually, this post may well have done FIC justice, let’s hope it starts raining again soon.
