A blog about hoodies & t-shirts, with news from the independent clothing world

Here’s the latest and greatest from the robot-lovers over at Terratag, this time around they’ve got Tokyoplastic to do the designing for them, and I think he’s done a pretty tidy job. The mix between the halftones and the solid-colour blood splashes works really well.

When I took a quick look, and it was a very quick look, at the submissions to Terratag’s design competition (basic guidelines: design a t-shirt with a robot on it) I wasn’t actually all that impressed with what I saw, but I guess that I must have missed this design, because I really like the concept, and the execution is pretty great too, so its a good thing it won the competition or I would have never seen it.

In the UK it feels like every day we get another story about economic doom and gloom, so Terratag are attempting to buck that trend with this bold and bright (as in, fluorescent) tee that tells us that everything is going to be alright at some point in the future. Phew, I was getting worried for a minute there.

Keeping things British, Terratag have also got that summer feeling and thrown a few more items into their sale section.

Check out the selection here.

That isn’t a typo in the title there, Urban Retro have indeed added two hundred new designs to their store, from brands like Beautiful/Decay, Terratag, Junk Food, Wrongwroks, Seventyseven, and Supremebeing. Urban Retro are really turning into one of my favourite stores in the UK, and not just because they’re pretty liberal with their coupon codes. If you want to get 10% off your order just enter the coupon code SUMMER2008 at the checkout to be eligible for the discount. The coupon code is valid until the end of July.

At the weekend after my friends and I had a very late brunch in Manchester I dragged them to the rather fantastic Urbis building to check out an exhibition called ‘How Manga Took Over the World’, which, as you’d imagine, was all about how Japanese graphic design style has influenced us in the West. I know purists will probably be a bit annoyed they called it ‘Manga’ rather than ‘anime’, but I let it slide since they probably just wanted it to sound more accessible. I only persuaded two of my friends to join me inside (the rest waited in the little park outside) despite it being a free exhibition, in fact, all the exhibitions at the Urbis are free. I don’t actually know much about anime, but I do know that I like the work of Terratag, Tado and Jon Burgerman, and those guys were represented in abundance, as well as several other artists that I recognised but can’t remember off the top of my head. The exhibition isn’t actually that big, I got around it in about 20 minutes, though I was rushing and not reading the explanations since I didn’t like to keep my friends waiting indulging my own interests whilst they drank medicinal Starbucks to alleviate the effects of the previous nights drinking. If you’re in Manchester city centre for any reason over the next few months (the exhibition runs until September 27th) then I highly recommend checking it out.

This ones for you Kevin. Terratag have a page on their site that has ‘end of line’ and overstock items on sale for around 50% of their original price, which pretty much brings them into line with a premium tee if you’re an American, and is damn cheap by British standards. I guess that the items on sale will be changing all the time, and I’d be the first to admit that they aren’t exactly selling my favourite Terratag designs, but still, bargains are there to be had.Terratag Specials Page

With an informative title like that, I don’t really know how much more I can say!

Terratag, who I’m pretty sure everyone likes, are dropping the shipping charges for the bank holiday weekend, which means you’ve got until the end of Monday (GMT) to get an order in.

If you’d like to see everything that Terratag are selling at the moment, just click on this thumbnail for a really, really tall image.

Now we’re talking, Terratag are part of an exhibition, and for a change it isn’t in London! They’re involved with a show called ‘How Manga Took Over the World’ which is running until September 27th at the magnificently designed Urbis Gallery in Manchester (fact: I have waited for a taxi at 4am outside that gallery). I might actually get a chance to go to this, so if I do I’ll post a report.

The artwork that they’re displaying there has been made available as limited edition prints at the exhibition, online, and at their physical store on Brick Lane, London. But I know most of you aren’t concerned with an exhibition, you’re all about the tees, and luckily I can help you there too.

To celebrate the May Bank Holiday and (hopefully) a start to summer, Terratag has added a further 10 Robot designs to the Mecha range. With this release we are also offering 10% off - offer ends 09 May.

Also, if you are in London this weekend, print out this email and present it in the Terratag Store on Brick Lane… And, you too will get 10% off anything you buy.

Here’s the new robot designs.

The Urban Retro crew are clearly just waiting for the day when our robot slaves inevitably rise-up, stop riding bicycles for our amusment, and enslave the rest of us because they’ve been appeasing the robot world with so many fine, fine robot-based products in their store. They’ve added t-shirts by Dephect and Terratag, vinyl toys, iPod & iPhone gelaskins and even some Poketo wallets that all benefit from that extra touch of awesome that can only come from having a robot-based design.

Throughout the whole month of April you can get 15% off your order (that doesn’t necessarily have to involve robot products… I think) by using the coupon code LOVEROBOTS. There’s that number 15 again, this is getting kinda weird!

Check out their blog post all about the latest releases.
