best cities for indie merchants

Storenvy, the hosted storefront people, have put together a couple of blog posts listing where they think are the best places to be/live if you’re the kind of person selling indie things (let’s not just restrict ourselves to tees for a change). It also serves as a pretty good guide to where you could take your brand if you were thinking of touring the country to hit craft shows. There aren’t really many surprises on the list, but it is an interesting read and certainly inspires some wanderlust in me (I may live in a beautiful place, but sometimes I wish I had some big city excitement to go with these mountains and lakes).

australian cities t-shirt

You know what’s interesting about Australians, they all seem to absolutely love Australia, and how do I know this? Because everywhere you go (bearing in mind I’ve never been to Australia) there are Aussies banging on about how great their homeland is, if it’s so great, why are you in a rainy part of Britain!?

I kid, I really like having people from lots of different cultures living in my area, since the Lake District is a pretty quiet place and it’s good to hear a different accent.

Costiness=$29 (AUD, presumably) Buy it at La Revolucion

andysadventures020a400 The HYA x Art In the Age Adventure Series!

So, what happened when Philly’s finest t-shirt company gave me a disposable camera and told me to go have fun? I recreated famous images from Rocky, obviously.

I’m doing a bit of guest-blogging for Art In The Age, but it doesn’t involve me writing about t-shirts (gasp!), it involves me writing about all the cool places that I’ve been in Philly (and beyond, but mostly in the Iladelph). My first post is all about the city’s favourite fictional son, Rocky Balboa. I’ve been up those famous steps three times now (once on a walk just to go to them, once whilst I was on the way to tour a creepy disused prison, and again when my brother came to visit), and I know I’ll be going again when one of my friends comes to visit. However, I’ve never actually made it into the Art Museum, y’know, the place that the steps actually lead to.

Threadless Loves… Travel

by Andy on October 10, 2008

loveslogo Threadless Loves... Travel

[I'm busy as hell, please excuse the recent rash of blurb-based posts]
This one’s probably the most open-ended contest that Threadless has ever run (apart from the regular contest… obviously), because its theme is just ‘Travel’. The winner gets sent to Iceland which is really cool, even if that country is probably about to go bankrupt.

Community-centric tee shirt company Threadless.com is proposing its design community to describe their taste for adventure in its latest “Threadless Loves Travel” challenge. Whether a tropical getaway, a trip to space, a road trip across the country, or even a walk to the kitchen, designers are asked to bring their stories of continent-hopping and deepest travel desires to life.

The fun doesn’t stop there. Sponsors for the Threadless Loves Travel challenge have made it possible for the creator of the chosen design to actually fulfill his or her dreams of travel. Icelandair, action sports accessories company Dakine, IES Abroad (Institute for the International Education of Students), and even the band Calexico, are each making it possible for the best design to take to the skies in style. The creator of the winning design will receive a bounty of traveling goodies including two round-trip tickets to Iceland on Icelandair, a $1k credit to a travel site of his or her choosing, courtesy of IES, a Dakine Split Roller 90 Travel Bag, and a personalized song, written by Calexico, inspired by the winning design.

“Threadless Loves” challenges give designers an opportunity to flex their skills and design to a particular challenge. Challenges are sponsored and supported by companies relevant to the idea. Previous “Loves” partners include Hot Chip, Moby, MTV’s Human Giant, and the Lomographic Society International.

As always, designers will also receive a $500 Threadless gift certificate and $2,000 in cash!

Deadline for entries is October 22, 2008. For more info on the design challenge and all its partners, hit the links below:

HYA is back from Hong Kong!

by Andy on March 5, 2008

2293615173 68d1b50e48 HYA is back from Hong Kong!

After an unexpected and unwelcome 24 flight delay (props to Air France, they did put us all up in a hotel, but a 24 hour delay is still crazy) I’m back from Hong Kong and ready to get back in the swing of blogging. I got loads of e-mails whilst I was away from new (to me) brands, and loads of offers and deals (some of which have now sadly expired) so, I might be focusing less on product picks over the next few days whilst I try and clear out the backlog.

If you’d like to see what I was up to on holiday then check out my blog (admittedly, I wrote a lot more about food than what I got up to, and I didn’t write often enough). If you think you already read way too much of my waffly writing, check out my Hong Kong Flickr set, which will be expanding considerably over the next few days after I finish up processing all my RAW picture files.

HYA is going to Hong Kong!

February 20, 2008

Yeah, bet you didn’t expect to see that title on a HYA post! I managed to get a great deal and will be heading off on Friday morning, I’m going to try and write up enough posts before I go so that there will be something new every day, but I can’t guarantee that will [...]

Bienvenue a St Tropez

June 29, 2006

I feel like everything on HYA has been a bit disjointed for the past month or so, what with the week of downtime, then switching to a new host, so its pretty unfortunate that just as I’m back into the rhythm of blogging I’m going to go on holiday. As the title suggests I’m heading [...]
