Sprayground Bags at Margin London

Not tees, we know, but you can be wearing the best looking t-shirt and let your outfit down with a bland or ugly bag.

Chances are that, if you’re reading HideYourArms, you care about your printed tees and what you wear so, like a hair-flicking starlet, you deserve a decent printed bag (because you’re worth it).

American brand Sprayground is innovating baggage with their distinctive art-inspired range. With backpacks, weekenders, and iPad sleeves, all available in a range of great designs, Sprayground bags feature dripping gold paint, camo sharks, piles of cash, and many more unique prints, including a collaboration with Mishka.

Designer David Ben David, aka DBD, grew up in Miami painting, skating, surfing, and always on the go, packing his whole life in his backpack but all he could find were bags of the same old solid colors and shapes so had to create his own brand.

With stores as diverse as Nordstrom, Digital Gravel, Patricia Field, and Kitson carrying the range in America, and spotted on numerous artists including Rihanna, the bags have wide appeal, from streetwear stores to fashion boutiques.

Sprayground bags are made from durable polyester fabric and feature a sleek construction with hidden features, such as velour laptop, tablet and sunglasses compartments, ergonomic padded back support, and stash pockets.

Sprayground are reaching out to potential stockists across the pond when they make their European tradeshow debut exclusively at Margin, the independent trade show exhibition in London for new brands.

Renowned amongst key buyers and press as the launchpad for new brands, Margin has been providing an affordable platform for new brands since 2002 and will be the only trade exhibition across Europe to see the range of bags in person.

Since the exhibitions first started back in 2002, Margin can lay claim to providing the UK launching point of overseas brands such as Upper Playground, Diamond Supply Co, Stereo Sound Agency, Double Goose, Loreak Mendian, Syndrome, Nooka, Mimobots, Qwstion, Hixsept (now Etudes Studio), and many others, who all made their European or UK trade debuts at Margin, which celebrated 10 years of exhibitions in 2012.

Margin London at HideYourArms

Margin London at HideYourArms

Margin London has been kindly invited to contribute to HideYourArms. We’ll be posting some news about up-and-coming labels that will be exhibiting at Margin in February 2013, which takes place on the 10th & 11th, but firstly we think we should introduce ourselves.

Started back in 2002 as an affordable platform for new designers, Margin is the longest-running independent trade exhibition in London. The show presents designer women’s and men’s tailoring and accessories, as well as streetwear for men and women, to invited store buyers and press.

The humble tee has long been a starting point for numerous labels, and we’ve seen many an exhibitor start off with a t-shirt offering which has grown over the seasons to include a full range of clothing. Supremebeing, Lazy Oaf, Seventyseven, Dephect, YourEyesLie, and many others all started at Margin with tees before growing their stockist base and extending their range to include clothing, bags, jewellery (or jewelry for Americans!), and hats.

Margin has been providing a launchpad for brands to meet with key buyers and press for 10 years to date, and 2012 marked a decade of exhibitions.

To commemorate the occasion, a limited-edition 10 year book was printed for visitors to the show, but it’s also available to download as a PDF or as a super-interactive book for iPad. The iPad version features extensive galleries of previous seasons, as well as videos, and can be downloaded here.

Here’s the link to posts where HideYourArms mentions Margin including brand updates from when they last visited (well overdue for a revisit but Andy & the HideYourArms London correspondent are returning in February 2013!).

Margin is an intimate showroom exhibition in a white gallery space in the heart of Central London, and the only tradeshow in the UK where buyers and press can discover new & emerging design talent (most making their debut launch).  When we say “NEW”, we don’t just mean new to Margin, we mean brand-spanking, never-been-seen-before, new!

Post image for Upper Playground Tupacabra and B.I.G.Foot T-Shirts SS’12

Upper Playground’s Alex Pardee uses Hip Hop legends Tupac and Biggie thus creating them into unlikely living cryptic creatures unto these two well designed t-shirts. The Tupacabra t-shirt comes in athletic heather gray and light blue and the B.I.G.Foot t-shirt comes in charcoal and white. Price is $26.

2 t-shirts by SAN at Upper Playground

SAN t-shirts for Upper Playground

I have no idea who ‘renowned Spanish street and fine artist SAN’ is, but I do know that he (or she) has created a a couple of great looking shirts for Upper Playground. Here’s their blurb about the release:

Following SAN’s recent collaborative show with ESCIF at FIFTY24SF Gallery, he crafted these two t-shirt graphics for Upper Playground around the idea of human stupidity. Specifically about how when people gather together to accomplish things with group action, they often look more and more absurd. The “Ants” t-shirt uses human bodies in a minor scale to show the mirrors in social organization between ants and humans. While the “Bicycle” tee shows a group of people happy about doing things in human sync but looking more and more like clowns while doing their job.

Upper Playground’s 50% off EVERYTHING sale!

by Andy on January 15, 2009

If there were rankings for ‘totally awesome sales’, I think that every single item in Upper Playground’s catalogue being half price would probably be fairly high up that list, presumably a bit below ‘free puppy’ offers.

The sale to commemorate their 10th year of business is both running both online and off, though the bricks & mortar sale will be ending at UPs six stores today (the 15th), but the online sale will be running until the 25th, though I wouldn’t expect much to be left in stock towards the end. Sale on at [Coupon Codes]

by Andy on December 11, 2008, the people who sell hoodies (I’m never going to tire of saying that), have got a sale going on for the holidays, in which you can get 15% off anything in the store using the coupon code WinterHoodieSale, and you can get 25% off any of their Upper Playground range by using the coupon code uphoodiesale.

Grey Market are Finnish, just getting started

by Andy on December 10, 2008

The only time I went to Helsinki when I was walking around I felt as if I was still on the cruise ship rocking from port to starboard, which was very unpleasant, so I don’t really have fond memories of the place. I’m not going to hold it against the Finns behind Grey Market, because from the looks of things, they know a thing or two about making hoodies that are both good-looking and functional.

Apparently the new range is available from their store, Grey Market Supply, but I can’t find it, although I can find lots of other great brands there, such as Sixpack, Upper Playground, & Imaginary Foundation. Hopefully the hoodie above, and the ones in the gallery below, will turn up in the store soon, because they look great.

Upper Playground’s New Premium Line

by Andy on December 9, 2008

Upper Playground are kicking it up a notch and have released a new premium line of hoodies:

The Upper Playground DWP Premium hoodies are constructed from the finest wool sourced from Italy and overseas. The rib knit trim is also imported from Italy and the hoodies are fully lined with soft, satin-finish charmeuse. The menswear influence does not stop there; the DWP Premium Hoodies have design details that add just the right touch of “gentleman.” DWP Premium design features include a slimmer fit, an interior pocket and UP art label, chest welt pocket and 2 side welt pockets.

Considering that they’re ‘premium’ I’m surprised to hear that they’re only $120 a piece, and they do look pretty damn nice. The hoodies can only be bought at the UP online store and at their bricks & mortar store in San Fransisco.
